BUL 1911/2011 pistols?
« on: May 06, 2020, 08:27:09 PM »
I’m curious to hear any experienced opinions on BUL 1911/2011 based pistols. I’ve been on the fence for some time about wether or not I really want a 1911 style pistol in my collection. I haven’t been very attracted to most 1911s aesthetically and reliability seems to be an issue unless you dump a lot of money into them. I’m not really experienced with 1911’s either though. I do like the new DWX compact but the BUL line just speaks to me, especially the BUL SAS II Ultralight. So I’m not interested in a race gun or anything like that. My main interest is in a compact, high cap., 9mm, and RELIABLE 1911 to add to my carry rotation. Currently I have a P365 and an M&P Bodyguard for the pocket as my choices for carry. I’m planning to spend a decent amount so I’ll be selling several guns to fund it.

General thought is reliablity decreases with the smaller the 1911 is. You don't have to dump a bunch of money or mods into a 1911 for it to run though. They are picky sometimes though when it comes to ammo and mags. I have provided a video below that is pretty good on 1911 thoughts from two true experts I would say! There is a video of these two talking that I can't seem to find and they both agree that the best production 1911 is the Ruger SR1911 and the best semi cutom is a Dan Wesson. They both seem to run right out of the box the best.

I was impressed by BUL 1911 at IWA. The barrel was really thick, the trigger was ok, nice finish. After a couple of months my friend bought one of their high-end 1911s and the magic was gone. I shot about 3 magazines with this wonderful piece of art and- guess what- this thing jammed every 9 rounds. Never again.

What specific BUL model was it?

It was one of their SAS II models, don't remember exactly which one.

I’m also curious what ammo y’all were using.

Claymore504:

Thanks for the videos. I love the history behind different guns. I dig the Wilson Combat compacts too but they’re well outta my price range even used. Maybe one day though.

we were shooting Geco and S&B. 115 gr in all likelihood.  I was dissapointed the same way with Sig320- the brand new gun I bought had problems with trigger reset and jammed as well. Sold it after 2 weeks.

I truly think the unreliability off the 1911, at least as described on the interwebs, is a bunch of crapola. Case in point, I have a Kimber Custom Target that has been my only 1911 for almost 20 years. Has many, many 230 hardball and hp rnds, one (1) FTE. And we all know how unreliable Kimbers are. Just check the 'net.

As for Bul. Made in Israel. They supply the 1911 to Magnum Research. Check the reviews of these. Just awesome. When I get a Commander it will be a Bul or Ruger.

I just purchased a Magnum Research 1911GS 45acp manufactured by BUL.  Although I haven’t fired it due to ranges being closed, I can’t find any manufacturing or cosmetic flaws.  Also can’t find bad reviews.  Absolutely no slop in slide /frame fit, very good trigger, perfect fitment of the controls.  Should be a great shooter.  I may be torn between this and my 97.

I am not sure what your budget is but the Wilson Combat is an amazing firearm. I hear ya on the price though.  The Ruger SR1911 Commander is a very nice firearm at a real good price. I shot one at my local range and ended up purchasing one. I have around 2k rounds through it without a single failure. I wouldn't hesitate to carry it although I prefer higher capacity. You mentioned higher capacity as well so I assume you were looking at the 2011? I never heard of BUL but I looked them up and for the price of one of those you could get an STI. I have an STI 2011 4.5inch with threaded barrel and red dot sight. it cost me $2500. You can find them for good prices on occasion on Gun Broker. I have over 5k rounds through that firearm without any malfunctions of any kind. It is extremely accurate and still extremely tight. No signs of wear anywhere(Its that tight) and the DLC(Diamond Like Coating) they use is excellent. Everyone that shoots it really likes it. It eats any ammo I have thrown at it. Out of the box it had a crisp 2lb 10oz trigger pull that has settled in at about 2lb 5oz. It came with a 17 round magazine and a 21 round magazine.

I’d love a Wilson Combat but that’s way to rich for my blood. Everything about the Bul SAS II Ultralight checks every box for me. It’s like the most useful piece of jewelry.

Not long ago on Gun Broker there was a guy that had a Wilson Combat Carry Comp listed for private sale. Said it only had a few mags through it and it looked immaculate. It was a 9mm comped 4.5 inch barrel for I want to say around $2699. If I had the money at the time I would have jumped at it. He didn't sell it so he may have it listed again. Its worth a look. I shot a STI comped 9mm at the local range when STI was there promoting their new line. It shot so flat. Almost no rise at all.

The Bul is less than half that new.

When I looked them up I only saw their custom pistols kinda like the STI's. Was just checking out the model you mentioned in your last post and that is a great price. STI has something very close to that for carry and it is between $1500 to $2000 depending on the finish and options. I will have to check out some reviews on them. I might need a new carry gun. lol
