Bren 2 Carbine v.s. Bren 2 11" 5.56
« on: May 15, 2020, 06:46:07 PM »
I want to add a 5.56 Bren 2 to the collection. If price wasn't a factor, which one would you pick?

I have a 9" Bren 2 in 7.62x39.

Mission dictates gear.

What do you want to do with the gun?

If you want to suppress it, the shorter pistol is going to be easier to work with.

Conversely, if you want to push the envelope and pin and weld a carbine, you can probably go down to 13.7 inches and still have a relatively small and handy suppressed gun that actually has a suppressor setting.  Still, depending on the can, anything over 11 or 10.5 inches gets kind of long once you start adding silencers.

If you want a non NFA firearm that will probably shoot ridiculously soft, get the carbine.

If you want to shoot groups, get the carbine.  It will more than likely be more accurate due to the heavier profile barrel but the differences will probably be minimal.

I'd go for the 11". The heavy barrel on the Carbine and the lack of a bayonet lug both really turn me off.

I personally picked up the 14" and plan to pin and weld a long enough flash hider on to make it a rifle. I fell in love with the Bren 2's appearance in a Hungarian Army video on youtube, and it was the 14" in 5.56 that got me.

I just picked up the carbine and I can see why people don't like the heavy barrel.  It's the exact same diameter barrel as my scar 17....I really wanted the 16 inch rifle but will probably pick up the 11 or 14 soon, now that they are around $1550.   Does the 14 inch barrel pistol come with bayonet lug still?.  I was thinking that was only in the s2 pistol, but looks like I'm incorrect.

Are you going to keep the carbine if you get an 11 or 14? Or sell it?

The 14" barrel 5.56 Bren 2MS does indeed have the bayonet lug. It's the 14" 7.62x39 Bren 2MS that lacks the bayo lug.

Both calibers of the initial Bren2S had bayonet lugs on the 14" barrels, and at least one early example of a 14" 7.62x39 Bren2MS seen on youtube had one too. All the latest 14" 7.62x39 Bren2MSs seem to lack bayonet lugs. It might be that this was done to save money after changing the muzzle thread type to 5/8x24.

When the muzzle thread was changed to 5/8x24, the barrel diameter required to make a sufficient shoulder large enough for the threaded shank became too large for the bayonet lug to fit over anymore.

Aha! That makes sense.

What was the thread pitch on the original 14" 7.62x39 Bren2S? 1/2x28?

Keeping the carbine for sure and adding the pistol..  On that smaller hole gas setting, (I click to the right, clickwise from behind the gun) the carbine shoots softer than any 556 rifle i own, and like most of us, I have many 556 rifles, .  I was shooting Federal 55g 556 and not only did it shoot super smooth, it had no malfunctions.  It ejected the brass in a small pile about two feet away from where I was shooting.  Big fan of the carbine.  Im using an MRO with scalarworks mount if anyone cares.  I'm trying to keep it light as possible.  That's why I'm going to get the pistol too, I need a lighter version.  The weight is the main downside, in my opinion.

Very possible, there was a weird transition point where some 7.62x39 guns came with 1/2x28 threads. This extended into some of the earlier bren 2 MS 7.62x39 guns as well. The original factory thread pitch is 14x1 LH like the 805 however and some of the first guns in should have come with this.

Well I went ahead and bought the Bren 2 pistol, 14 inch to go with my new Bren 2 carbine.  I found one for $1526 today and went for it.  I like the bayou lug and the velocity that you get with the longer barrel, compared to the 11 inch.  I think the 14 inch looks pretty good with the HBI handguard too.

I've shot the B2 carbine a few range trips now and it's a great shooter, just a little front heavy.  My gf loved shooting the B2 Carbine this weekend also.  It has almost no recoil when set to the smaller gas port, I guess MAC is saying that's the suppressor setting?  It has functioned 100% in the 2nd, small gas port setting with 5.56 Federal M193.
