CZ-82 Another Refinish Project
« on: June 27, 2020, 11:59:47 PM »
Here is the start of a journey. I picked up my  CZ-82 today from my local FFL that I bought from Fullerton Arms (https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Outdoor---Sporting-Goods-Company/Fullerton-Firearms-2007458602848039/.)

Here are pictures of the pistol, the break down, paint strip and sanding.

Broke down the pistol except for the trigger mechanism.   That looks way too fussy and above my skill level. I had help from

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv31Mr1XLsE

Paint is stripped with a off the shelf paint stripper

Sanded with 400 grit

More sanding...  a lot more sanding ...

Cold Blue finished

Final assembly and function check (still has a coating of oil on the blueing but I had to put it all together)

Nice work!  How many hours do you think you have into this?  Were there any surprises along the way you could warn us about?

Yes, several lessons learned.
1) You need a good punch set to get out the 40 year old pins.
2) You need to be good to the wife so you can do the breakdown on the dinning room table instead of the 90 degree shop in the garage, because you need to have operating room like organization.
3) Bags for parts, tools at hand, clean work area, and a camera on a tripod to capture the moments.
4) You need a magnet on a stick to get the firing pin spring when it launches out of the frame and heads into orbit or in my case, straight at the dog.
5) Punch set, Paint remover, 400 grit sandpaper, small hammer, needle nose, fine wire brush, wire brush on a grinder
6) Instructions that I had via a Youtube video that I kept stopping, backing up....

I think that does it so far

I'd recommend another go with 600 and/or 800 grit before you cold blue. Bluing will highlight any scratches in the metal.

You are correct but sanding is really the worst part of it.  Going at it again.....

The best part of this project was learning how the gun works.  I know why it will not fire as I lower the hammer after releasing the trigger, I understand how the safety works and why it snaps into place.  So much respect to the engineers, this is a real marvel of design.

Seems like it worked well. Nice looking "after" pictures, too. Your CZ looked like she had been around, and you brought her back to life.

That's a great looking pistol. You did a good job. I have a couple that I picked up 2 years ago that look like the before pictures. I striped tnem to clean and oil but left them looking really used. I've seen some great DIY restores on this forum. I think I will give it a try.

About 10 years ago, I did pretty much the same thing. The cold blue finish of my CZ82s  still look great today.

I can't tell which one I like better, they are both really nice!
