22 LR model choice for range shooting
« on: June 28, 2020, 09:54:08 AM »
Currently own several CZ pistols and love them. Ready to pull the trigger on a new range toy.  Our range goes out to 400 yards with targets and steel in place with covered benches.  Want to have a rifle that will work with good glass and bipod added.  100 yards would be starting point each trip and moving out.  Would prefer to shoot out of box instead of changing stock etc.  Suggestions for which model may be my best choice?

.22 LR would not be my choice for ranges beyond 100 yards.

CZ offers there 457 MTR (match target rifle) which seems a logical staring point. At 400 yards with a 22 L.R. you'll need some well developed wind reading skills.

Even 200m with 22LR requires serious practice and wind reading skills. We shot 22 "tactical" matches up to 200m (Prone/Bipod) and scope adjustment range from 50m to 200m supported not by all scopes. Need to use mil-dots often too.

I find it harder to shoot a .22 rifle at 200 than a pistol!   :)

Beyond 100m, 22LR rifle is challenging, but very rewording. I am yet to hit more than 6 out 10 targets sizes about 4x6" at that distance. Especially if windy.

Thanks for your suggestion.  That was where I was thinking. While out to the two hundred mark I expect is the most logical and yes three hundred is most challenging.  But if there is steel hanging at four hundred I think you have to take a few shots for the fun and giggles.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The fun in anything is to accomplish something that makes you feel good about working out some kinks and feel fairly comfortable doing what you set out on.   Ask a guy that shoots 90 on the golf course but birdies 18.  He usually is ready to play again tomorrow. Just my two cents.

I agree that the glass will be as big a part of the combo as the rifle. Will spend more on the glass than the rifle itself.  Have been looking over the vortex line thinking that will give the biggest bang for the buck.

Piddle--I am thinking about a CZ rimfire also, and the MTR looks to be a good choice.  I don't know how much smaller  the chamber diameter is on the MTR compared to the other rifles or how much difference it really makes, but that is a consideration.

I put a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44 scope on my Savage .22 last week.  I liked it so much that I bought another one for an AR-15 while they were still on sale at Midway.  The mil-dot first focal plane reticle is similar to my G2DMR reticle on my .308 rifle.   I had a Mueller for the .22 but never liked it.

I hope you get good results from whichever rifle you choose.  And I was serious about being very comfortable and successful at 200 yards with a pistol, with a red dot sight with no magnification, so having a good scope on the .22 SHOULD be easy at 200-300 yards with a rifle...except for the .22 part.

If you really set to try 22lr on 200m and beyond, get a 30mm tube scope. 1” tube scope don’t have elevation adjustments even with 25min scope base compensation.

Good point.  The Vortex Diamondback Tactical has a 30mm tube.  When I was shopping, I didn't even see very many 1" tube scopes any more.

I use the 455 Tacticool for playing like you mention. The Varmint has a longer barrel which would be preferred for longer range.

I need some opinions about CZ 455 Camp rifle, factory equipped with peep sight. I need rimfire rifle for my local club sport competition, 50m prone position without optic and 30m standing - 10 shots for each competition. On last competition, I was using Suhl K150 from my friend, great gun but .... he doesnt have magazine :). From standing position I got the result 87/100 points.

I think you will find shooting a .22LR at those distances to be a blast!

I have a 455 Varmint Evolution with a Vortex optic. Honestly, I dont remember which model or the magnification range off the top of my head. Shooting various match grade ammo's I found that it really likes the Eley match in the purple box, forgot which one that was specifically but I did purchase 1K rounds after discovering that.  At 50 yards I am making a single ragged hole. At 100 yards its sub moa and out to 200 yards I can make a 3" group.  That last one could be tightened up I am sure, but the only chance's I have had to stretch it that far it has been pretty windy.  (10 mph or so of cross winds)

I use this setup to take squirrels from the porch with CCI Quiet rounds, some times as far as 80 yards out with deadly accuracy. You will have a blast with a 455/457 variant.  Look into the "Yo-dave" trigger kits.  I got my trigger pull down to 1.5lb with 0 creep.  Its probably one of the best triggers of any setup I have ever felt. I want to pick up another variant of this platform in .17HMR or .22Mag.  Personally, I love rimfire firearms. Cheap to shoot, and you dont need 500+ yard ranges to push their limits.
