Federal Punch 9mm JHP
« on: July 07, 2020, 08:30:13 PM »
I ordered a box of Federal Punch 9mm JHP way back on April 15th from Bass Pro Shop.  It was back ordered and finally showed up today.  (Just saw they cancelled the Winchester silvertip that was part of the same order)

124 grains Advertised as 1150 fps.

Tried to do a water jug test, but failed to capture the bullet.  I took 3 jugs and it looks like it exited all 3.  Subjectively i feel like i got way more wet compared to the S&B test.

I will update when i get a chance to do another test.

Been wondering about that ammo. I'd be particularly interested in how performance compares to the 124gr HST, which is my usual 'go to' round.

I use 124 and 147 grain HST too.

Due to a little mishap during the initial setup i only had half full jugs today.

Did catch the bullet in 3rd jug which is a little thicker than a milk jug

Measuring with the calibers i got 14.7 mm and 15 mm.

What i noticed when measuring is the jacket peeled back in 6 even pieces, but the lead expansion seem minimal.

Here it is next to one of the S&B JHP.  Both fired from my Rami.

Interesting test and great photos. Thanks for posting.

It's not so much about the final diameter of the bullet. The bullet's energy opens up a wound channel and shocks the target's system. In my understanding, what's more important is that the bullet stays together so that it can retain that energy.

Thank you for trying it out.

The bullet looks more conical than the HSTs I generally prefer. It might open up a 124 option for some micro/subcompacts that don’t like the round profile 124s.

Repeated the test with the Rami, very similar results.

Did a third with the Sar B6P to see how the longer barrel affected it.  A little more expansion, but otherwise very similar.
