Ejection Issues
« on: July 16, 2020, 12:17:13 PM »
Had about 10 of these this morning in about 300 rounds. I changed out the recoil spring with a new and it persisted. Think it's probably the extractor or the extractor spring. Has about 10k rounds on it.

Need to sort this out today so I can function test tomorrow. Have a match on Sunday.

looks like the extactor isn't holding on. Have you removed it, cleaned it and the extractor space, checked the extractor spring yet? The recess for the extractor likes to collect carbon and gradoo over time. I've heard the spring is a scheduled maintenance issue, but don't recall the recommended changeout round count.

That's my guess. I just removed it. Was definitely dirty. The pin was intact. No damage that I can see to the actual extractor. Spring was also intact but can't tell if its lost tension.

I had an extra extractor and spring so I just swapped it out. Cleaned the crevice while I was in there. Now I have a reason to go shoot some more tomorrow. Have to function test before my match Sunday.

Definitely the extractor. Here is a pic of the extractor with a case inserted. Look how loose it is. If I turn over the slide,  the case falls right out. It shouldn't. It should be held snugly against the breech face by the extractor.

Thought I would share for the sake of others troubleshooting case ejection issues.

Can you post a picture looking at the front face of the extractor hook? I'm wondering if you lost a piece.

I bought a used (I'm at least the 3rd owner) P-09 9mm upper to run on my .40 P-09 for demos (since a. 9mm is a lot more popular and b. the .40 P-09 is discontinued). After a few months of ownership, it started having extraction/ejection problems at one of the demo events. Noticed that a big piece of the extractor hook was missing when compared to a replacement part. CZ has seen that type of breakage from dropping a round directly in the chamber and letting the slide slam into it. I never did it, but who knows about owner #1 or any of the demo users.

I compared it to the new one. I didn't notice any difference. What I do notice is it appears like it's not sitting in the slot flush. Like its bent outward.

Check out the pics.

I agree the extractor hook looks OK, but the extractor position seems wrong. Not sure how one would bend the extractor. Is the channel clear or is something pushing it out?

I don’t think it’s bent. The gun looks a little crusty. No offense, I just mean there could be some buildup behind and on the extractor and inside the hook and the spring isn’t strong enough to push it back in place. Visibly the extractor looks ok. If it were me I’d remove the extractor and clean it and clean inside the slide with a fine pick to scrape anything stuck deep in the crevices and replace the extractor spring. If that doesn’t do it then just replace the whole extractor.

Good close-up images by the way. Good detail.

If I’m cleaning a gun that has some really baked on crust I like to use a good spray degreaser that dries without leaving any residue. That makes the crust stick out like a sore thumb. Just make sure it’s safe to use on whatever gun finish you have. Then I use some fine point surgical stainless picks to get in there and scrape that stuff out like a dental hygienist. ;D Sometimes that stuff can get hard baked on there.

Haha. No offense taken calling ma gun cruddy. These are my work horses. My USPSA competition guns. I don't baby them that's for sure. It's been about 10k rounds since I detail stripped and cleaned it so not surprised by the crud.

I cleaned the channel pretty well though. It's not sparkling but I don't think its dirty enough to push the extractor out. I think it's just the spring is bad. Lost its tension.

They make a stronger extractor spring. It may help with your issue after you clean out the extractor channel.

So my dilemma continues. As I mentioned, I changed out the extractor and spring using spare parts I had. I ran about 75 rounds after the change with no issue. I new I wouldn't know for certain in that few rounds but things looked to be working well. Brass was being ejected properly and consistently. I was wrong.

I shot a USPSA match yesterday. In 7 stages, I had at least 1 FTE in 4 stages. I had 2 in 1 stage. Train wreck of a match. UGH! Same issue. Case remains inside chamber, then gets jammed with new round.

I ordered all new everything yesterday when I got home from then match. New extractors, new extractor springs, new mag springs and new recoil springs. Both my match guns have a LOT of rounds through them since I replaced everything on them. Easily over 12k rounds. Probably much more.

I'm still leaning towards it being the extractor but not so sure anymore. It may be the mags. Well, I should be squared away once I replace all this stuff. I have 2 weeks till my next match so I should be able to get all the parts in and tested by then.

Stay tuned.

With the spare parts extractor replacement did the position return to normal?  It looks to be hanging out there in your pictures.  Did it hold the case better?

Hopefully the new parts get it sorted.

Cheers,
Toby

So since this post, I ended up replacing all the springs in the gun and all my mag springs as well. It was past time to do so. Gun so far is running like a champ. I shot about 400 rounds on Thursday in training. No issues. Ran the gun hard doing Bill Drills, 4 Aces and some transition drills. It was malfunctioning before about every other mag so it looks to be fixed.

I have a USPSA Match tomorrow so I will know for sure. Let's hope it behaves. I will share how it goes.
