I need a temporary replacement for Sport Pistol
« on: August 03, 2020, 05:12:22 PM »
I'm almost out of Sport Pistol, and I'm looking for a temporary replacement until I find more.

I've got True Blue, AA#2, HP38, and WST on hand.

I'm loading 130pf 9mm using 124gr coated bullets and Fed SPP, out of a Shadow 2.  3.8gr of Sport Pistol did the trick.

Which powder that I have on hand would be the next best fit?

HP38 worked for me before I switched to Sport Pistol. 124 and 135gr Hitek coated rn.

Replied to your post in the Enos forum. HP38/win231 loads identically to sport pistol. I used to load win231/HP38 until I switched over to sport pistol.

Good to know, I've only used it in 45acp.  Thanks, again.

HP-38 is the exact same powder as Winchester 231.

One single powder simply marketed under 2 different names, and NOT manufactured by either firm.

with what you have on hand I would start using the HP38. As stated it is the same powder as w231 and loads very similarly to Sport Pistol.
I have used both Sport Pistol and HP 38 and honestly I ma not sensitive or good enough to distinguish them from each other.

If you have a few extra bucks and want to try a real clean and good powder Vit N320 is always a great choice. It is hard to come by and people think its expensive
but thats subjective when you spread it out over the 1750 rounds you load with a pound.

I'd say the HP 38 will be so close to the same load as you are using you will be very happy with it.

Just my opinion.

Another Vn320/Sport Pistol fan here. As ol Wobbly and others suggested, it is a great round. Velocities/weights should be similar. I started with N320 and switched to SP due mainly to cost. I would say that n320 meters a little better and isn't as dusty. I'd still grab SP first if possible.

Grafs has IMR Target in 8lb jugs for $150.

Now, no one here (that I know of) has tried Target, but it's one of their new ones. Been out for about 4 years. So it should have documentation somewhere. This took the place of IMR 7625 when it was discontinued. Should be in the W231 speed range.

Given that I can't find any SP or N320, I think I'll order some Clean Shot and Win 244 while Grafs has some in stock.  Both sound like good 9mm minor powders.  Then I'll stock up when I see some Sport Pistol.

244 was supposedly a replacement for 231 when it was introduced. We haven't tested any yet.

Sounds like a great job for you.  ;D

Sounds like a plan.  I'll get some Clean Shot and 244 and post the results here...

I found 4.0-4.1gr of 244 ran really well with my 120-125 9mm lead range of bullets. Very consistent with about 1050 fps.
