Home Defence 18" 20 Gauge Pump for Momma ?
« on: August 26, 2020, 07:30:49 PM »
Looking to get a relatively inexpensive (but not "CHEAP") 20 gauge Pump for my Wife
Anyone have any experience with the EAA import, Akkar Churchill 620 or their 612 ?
https://www.gunsamerica.com/947520499/Akkar-Churchill-620-Home-Defense-20-Gauge-18-5-111200.htm

Thanks

Nope no experience with that at all. I did do some looking and at the average price they go for it's your choice. Even with the issues at Remington in recent years I'd have a hard time not buying an 870 and Mossberg is no slouch either. I'd feel better knowing the history of both those guns.

A lot of the issue is "availability" and Mossbergs are closer to a Grand then She'd like to spend on a Gun, that hopefully is never really needed !
Also looking at the Winchester S(uper)XP 20X18s too

a lot of that is pandemic/riot panic pricing

a year or two ago, you could easily find used Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 (12 or 20 ga) for $200 or less on GunBroker.

Most of the Turkish made guns are good quality. I've shot a couple of Akkar 12 Guage pumps, they worked fine. Bud's has a good price on a 20 guage Savage Arms Steven's defense shotgun.

A Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88 is a great choice. I don't know how tall your wife is, but a youth model is excellent for people under 5'6".

Yeah, I've noticed that too !
If I want to play the "Bid and Pray" game, I can still get a few "Name Brands" for under $300

Have seen them too
Thought hard on that Savage/Stevens, but She's not a big Fan of the "Pistol Grip" on a Shotgun
And the Mossberg Bantam 20 looks nice too, as opposed to their 500 or the 88
The Winchester SXP is running in the mid $500.00s around here
That may be a candidate, if She wants a name brand
But the SXPs are made in .... Istanbul

Get-Some, here in Orem, has that Akkar Churchill 620 for under $250.00 out the door
It's a real "No Frills", Straight Pipe, but as long as it goes "Bang", and not KaBOOM, it may be what She ends-up with
Not that She NEEDS it, but She's ask me to "keep something handy" at night, as of late
And She dislikes my 1300; on several levels
It's not like we're in a "War Zone" here in our area of Northern Utah, but who'da thunk Kenosha, WI either ! ? !

So what if the gun is made in Istanbul?

Do you think all Turks are muslim or all are islamist? When I was stationed in Izmir probably 1/2 of the people I met were Orthodox Christian or Sufi Muslim, not the islamist suuni or shia.

It isnt about whether Turks are Muslim, etc. It is about quality concerns. I am in the same boat, looking for another HD shotgun. Prices are high due to panic buying and the cheaper manufacturers are ginning them out like crazy, with the Chinese and Turkish made guns priced about where a good used Mossberg was before everything went crazy. That's why the foreign stuff is of interest right now, because of current pricing.
People make a good point that the quality of American made firearms isnt what it once was, but for my money I would still rather search online auction sites and see if I could luck out with an older production 870 or 500. The Turk made stuff may be fine, but for me it would lack "peace of mind" confidence- and it would take a lot of problem-free performance to instill that with the foreign stuff. Thats just my 2 cents, and others mileage may vary.

By the way, when searching for shotguns on line, search for the gauge rather than by make. Some of these companies made "store brand" shotguns for places like Sears, Montgomery Wards, Western Auto, etc. That are essentially the same as brand name guns by the same maker. Its easier to find one with a standard barrel than 18 or 20 inch barrels, they tend to be cheaper as well and you can always have a smith cut down the barrel.

Do a bit of research, Turkish made guns tend to be good to excellent quality. A lot if not all of the CZ branded shotguns are made in Turkey as are Stoeger, Weatherby, and if I recall correctly some Beretta. Yildiz seems to be very popular in Europe & the U.K. for low to mid priced guns. I have one of their SPZ-ME 20gauge O/Us thats seen 1000s of rounds of birdshot. The only complaint is it lobs empties into next week.

Chinese on the other hand can be iffy. The Savage Arms Stevens branded guns are OK, only because Savage tests and rejects any bad guns before releasing.  The Russian made guns scare me, the last few  looked at were, to be polite, complete crap.

Pawn Shops

Shotguns and guitars a plenty at Pawn Shops.

Guess you might not know what you are getting into - but buy a named brand like a Mossberg and if you have any issues with it...send it in to them to fix.  Especially if it is a more well known (or quantity sold) brand be easier to get parts for - etc.

Also check armslist - I've purchased quite a few firearms from gun stores in different states off Armslist. (I don't mess with private sellers on there)

Some of the older shotguns are super nice....sometimes the price goes down as the barrel length increases on some models..because people want that HD shotgun but not a 28 inch + barrel, so some of them sit on the Pawn Shops walls for awhile...if you can get a good deal on a shotgun with a long barrel...replace barrel with HD barrel if cost effective or cut it if possible.
16 CZs and counting

I did just what you are wanting to do about a year ago I was looking for a short barrel 20 gauge when I found the Mossberg Shockwave 12 gauge.  I added the $10 OPSol insert so it would function with Aquila mini shells and it recoils like a .410 the insert will fit any Mossberg pump. What I like about the Shockwave is it has a legal 14" barrel and it's not classified as a shotgun so there are no special fees when you buy it.  My wife found the mini shell buckshot load very easy to control and accurate out to 8 to 10 yards and with an added laser the 1/2 oz slugs were also accurate.

I have read about them, and understand that many people like them. They just arent for me. Some people likewise love some of the Russian made stuff, I might try one of the Russian made combo guns if I ever find one and can handle it before buying.

Ive seen some of the Russian guns made by Baikal, the only one I actually fired was a single shot 12 gauge that a fri4nd of mine had. It functioned properly, but did have a sense of crudeness about it.

WOW .... where'd THAT come from ?     ???
This really shows the need for a "Sarcasm Font"
Sorry if you took, but there was NO offence meant
I was being sarcastic, given the irony that this "cheep" Akkar Churchill is made in the same city as the (big, name brand) Winchester SXP and many other FINE Firearms
I have and cherish a (non CZ) Huglu 202B
And (most-likely) will buy the Akkar Churchill 620 for my Wife

Well, we picked-up that Akkar Churchill 620 today
Nice little Shotgun really
Looks to be built on their 12 Gauge Receiver, so it should be tough enough in 20 Gauge
We'll try and take a drive out the Canyon tomorrow, and give it a good run-through
Will be shooting Win Super X 2.5" #3 Buck thru it
I'll report back on how that goes

Don't get her a shotgun, get her a pistol caliber carbine, like a CZ EVO Skorpion w/ lights, laser etc. Much easier to shoot and hit things with than a shotgun and many more rounds to fire.
