Just Can't Leave Good Enough Alone
« on: September 13, 2020, 11:37:26 AM »
Just 3 days old and already I just couldn't resist customizing with some basic aesthetic changes.
Polished barrel, whited out text and new Cool Hand grips.

The Cool Hand's were a bit aggressive so I knocked 'em down a bit with 220 grit sandpaper.
Text was filled in with some automotive touch up paint.
Barrel stripped with the vinegar method and steel wool.

Has anybody done the same strip/polish treatment to the trigger and hammer?
I see a lot of people doing it to the barrel but I haven't seen anybody doing the trigger and hammer.

BTW, I'm new here and Im a new gun owner and as I said in my introduction post, she still makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks for any replies!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on becoming a full fledged American with your first gun purchase. Smart choice with the P-01.

I don't fuss around a lot with cosmetic changes to my guns. Not saying its should or shouldn't be done. My main focus with firearms is competition shooting so any money or time spent is on my guns is to improve reliability or shoot-ability of them or improving my shooting skill.

That all said, I'm a relatively new gun owner myself. I bought my first gun about 3.5 years ago. I went through a progression with my interaction with my guns. Early on, I cared a lot about aesthetics. Form was more important than function. I changed out grips because they looked cool, not because they functioned better for me. I used to get really bent when the finish got nicked. This stuff was important to me.

I then started to tinker with the internals. I went down the rabbit hole of chasing the "perfect" trigger. Swapping parts. Polishing parts. Etc. I say perfect in quotes because I really didn't understand what makes a good, practical action. It was all about getting the lightest trigger pull possible.

My next and sort of where I am today is when I started to focus more on actually becoming proficient at gun handling and marksmanship. Practical marksmanship. Soon after I discovered USPSA competition shooting. This is when I realized what I truly enjoyed about firearms. To shoot the guns, not admire them.

I realized that lightest trigger pull is not really what makes a great trigger. I understood that having a reliable pistol trumps everything else and that often, many of the mods that we do make a pistol less reliable. I learned that gun handling is just as important as marksmanship. I now look at my guns as tools of my competition shooting. What they look like is of no importance to me. How they feel in my hand, do they complete the task without a hiccup, can I handle and shoot them to the best of my current ability is what drives everything I do to them.

I just realized that I don't think I answered your question. My apologies. I was gonna delete and start over but maybe you'll glean something from my musings.

I also removed the black coating from my PCR barrel and I still don't regret it and still no issues with rust. If CZ blued the barrel so it doesn't wear-off so easily, I wouldn't have bothered. My OCDness didn't like the growing smile marks.

Did you darken the SN on the barrel or didn't remove the coating in the numbers? Looks good. Those are Ops Coolhands, right? I have the same ones and didn't find them aggressive at all.

EDIT: My mistake. Yours are not Ops Coolhands.

Gratz on the P-01, it looks neat. I believe that being a bit nervous when new to firearms is a good thing. It means that you are not stupid.  :)

I do believe that i have seen a few folks polish out their black factory triggers. I am not sure that i have seen a hammer done. I do not see any harm in doing a hammer as long as you avoid the hammer hooks. Let it be know that there are stainless or silver replacement options available for both parts.

May your P-01 run flawlessly.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Thanks for the reply Anonymouscuban.
I do realize that I am your typical gun noob at this point lol.  ;D ;D ;D
As a matter of fact, I'm currently on the lookout for the coolest looking weaponlight to go with my new toy-hahaha (probably the Olight PL Mini).
But for the meantime, as I haven't even made it to the range yet, I'm just gonna continue to admire the thing while I sit on the toilet between working from home!   :P
Cheers my friend and be safe!

I'm currently looking to buy a 10rd P-01 and already have my light picked-out! Olight Baldr Mini 600 lumens- with green laser! $130 is not a bad price. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CZ7MVMM/ref=emc_b_5_t
Regardless, if you buy directly from Olight and use sootch00 as the coupon code, I think it comes out cheaper than Amazon.

Thanks for the other replies guys,
Im gonna have to look into that Baldr Mini. My hands are naturally shakey though so I don't know if I want to announce that fact to the whole room with a laser.
As for the barrel SN number, the black text is from the original finish. I too think it came out pretty well.
I dunno yet if I will strip and polish the trigger and hammer (knowing me, I probably will). Thanks for the suggestion of aftermarket versions but I don't think I want to sink in much money for cosmetics unless I decide the stock trigger needs to be ugraded.

If you intend to carry it (holster) then it might be a good idea to research what holsters you can get for the different lights.  No use buying a neat light that you can't get a holster for (meaning a holster for the pistol with the light attached to the rail.

I've got the PL minis on my P01's.  Compact light on a compact pistol.  For reference.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I'm digging that new less curved trigger. Too bad CZ has yet to offer them for those of us with the old curved trigger.  :(

The CGW old style 85c looks to be, if not the same, really close to the same profile.

Are these grips Coyote or Gun Metal color? I bought a pair of these in Gun Metal (grey&black) color for my P-01 and they look and fit really well. I'm thinking of buying another pair, but a different color, for my PCR. Thanks.
