Decocker and Trigger Cleaning on non-Omega SP01
« on: September 26, 2020, 08:32:54 PM »
So like, what's the easiest way to do this? I have a slave pin but I really don't want to have to pull the whole cage out every time to clean it. But if I don't, no matter how well I drip some cleaner and wipe then flush with oil, I always end up getting some leaky dirty bleep from the back of the slide, hammer, and decocker, and sometimes the trigger after just casual dry firing or even leaving it in its case for gravity to drag the oil out of it.

Is there some secret or method to this that I'm not privy to, or do I just have to suck it up and break it down completely?

Spray it with non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner, blow it down with compressed air and oil it. Easy-peasy without removing the sear cage.

This is how I clean my competition guns.

Idk how I never thought to use compressed air. That sounds perfect. I'll give that a try tomorrow because that cage seems to collect ALL the crud.

I use the Hornady One Shot Cleaner & Lube. I NEVER take my guns all the way apart,no reason for it ! I spray, brush, spray again ! After 1000 rds or more through my 07 it ran black for half a can,LOL !I love the stuff. Give it a try.

I used to use that until a shooter friend told me non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner cleans just as good or better for half the price of one shot.

I just make sure I oil the parts after cleaning with brake parts cleaner since it’ll remove all the dirt and lubrication.

Do you have a preferred brand for that? About how much do you use when spraying?

The advantage of Hornady One Shot is that it is a spray CLP. After it cleans out the gunk, it still leaves behind a layer of protective dry-lube.

With brake cleaner, there is no lube or protectant left, so you need another step to lube and protect the metal.

Some may prefer quick and easy over cheap - as the old saying goes "Good/Fast/Cheap - pick 2"

I'm not too worried about that. Honestly, I've never much cared for all-in-one products anyways, and would rather go back through with a lubricant of my choice anyways.

You and me both. Reason why I use the non-chlorinated cleaner. I clean my competition guns after every match (3-4 times a month) and using brake parts cleaner and compressed air makes it easier and faster.

Exactly, I'm old/lazy & basically hate cleaning guns, :o, and for me spending the "extra" is worth it ! I hate how the BC leaves the white film or whatever. It mite just be that it strips ALL the oil and lube off and looks lie crap,LOL ! I have used BC on my ARs when doing a full break down and clean but for the price & convenience I like the One Shot for my handguns. Like I said I hate cleaning my guns, especially pistols, I keep them lubed well but not afraid of a little crime on them. The Ole One Shot takes care of it pretty easily !

No brand preference for brake parts cleaner. Just make sure it’s non-chlorinated or it’ll leave white spots on your gun. It doesn’t take much. A can ($3.50) last me a month of cleaning 3 guns and one rifle.

After that, I use Lucas extreme oil (sear cage etc) and Enos slide glide grease (barrel lug and slide stop/pin) to lubricate the gun.

I hose mine down with whatever gun cleaner you use. I use Lucas or Rem Oil for this step. I flush it a few times and then blow it out with compressed air. Then I go back with my oil of choice. Too easy.

Awesome. Thanks so much.

I think I might even invest in a small air compressor just for firearms instead of firing up the big tank every time. That plus a 6 pack of brake cleaner will probably be a good long term investment over stripping and cleaning everything with q-tips and pipe cleaners like a fool.

1.  Wear safety glasses/monogoggles.  You don't want that stuff in your eyes.  Burns like fire and hard to get to the shower to rinse your eyes out.  Did it once, years and years ago while cleaning up some wheel brake cylinders for rebuilt - yeah, people used to rebuild those things.

2.  I'd take the grips off, just to be sure.  I've seen brake cleaner melt plastic grips.  Still have a smeared spot (plastic checkering smeared) on my Ruger Mk1 bull barrel from about 40 years ago when I first tried carb. cleaner.

3.  Like people have mentioned, the lubricating/corrosion protection of whatever lube you use will be gone.  Make sure you take care of the metal surfaces pretty quickly after the cleaning session is done.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I've gotten standard bore/brake cleaner in my eyes before just from the mist produced by brisk barrel brushing. Needless to say I always keep splash goggles around now.

Already been taking my grips off each time anyways. Nearly impossible to control where things drip to even during hand cleaning. Plus my SP01 came with several extra sets of grip screws so normal wear and tear of taking them off each time doesn't bother me.

I'm pretty compulsive about keeping everything lubed after cleaning, which is what has lead me to this issue in the first place. I'd rather have a little bit of clear oil leak from my decocker than none or yellow/brown/black gunk.
