Varmint Cong! Need a .22...
« on: November 11, 2020, 12:01:04 PM »
Got a bunch of trash pandas and other assorted varmints around. Looking for a .22 to do some cleaning up.

Recs? Suggestions?

A reliable AND accurate .22 is a joy to carry/shoot.

I'll refer you to Joe's thread about accuracy frustrations with a .22 that won't do what you want it to and a .22 that will do what you want it to.

These days, if I was looking for a nice accurate .22 I'd either try to find and old Remington or Winchester target rifle (might not be nice but they sure do shoot good groups) or a new CZ bolt action (nice and said to be plenty accurate.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I second the 10/22 and would also suggest a Ruger Charger.

Third recommendation for the Ruger 10/22 here.  I've taken no less than eight (and and maybe a few more) Raccoons this year with my Ruger 10/22.  I 've owned it since about 1980 and it has accounted for a lot of small game.  It likes it's ammunition hot, and really works well with CCI Mini-Mags.  Lately, I've been using a vintage box of Winchester Super X HP's to dispatch the vermin.  Mine is topped with a 3x-9x-32mm Scope and is sighted in at 1 inch high at 25 yards.  Most of my shots have been head shots and most have been one shot kills.  I did have one very large Raccoon that took three shots to dispatch, but that was an exception to the rule.

I've also killed Raccoons with my old Bolt Action Marlin 782 in .22 Magnum, but that was at longer Range.  Many years ago, I had to dispatch a Raccoon with my old WWII Walther P-38 and a 9mm Winchester Silvertip, as he had attacked my Cat, and refused to give up the Cat.  Big mistake on his part.  Had the Head tested and fortunately he did not have Rabies.  The Cat recovered after being stitched up.

The only good Raccoon, is a DEAD Raccoon!

I once shot a (possibly rabid) racoon with a 9mm carbine from about 6 feet (it was an animal control call) 3 times and each round went straight through without hitting anything vital. In the end, I head shot the varmint with my Sig226 using a 124gr .40S&W Win Ranger. Bye Bye varmint!

22LR seems a better, and cheaper, choice!

It's hard to beat a 10/22. And if the winter gets long you can "improve it". Being this is a CZ forum a 452/453/455/457512 wouldn't be out of place even the 22 Magnum option. Mostly I would look at used that was local.

Like others have said, the 10/22 is hard to beat. They're great out of the box, but as bad or worse than an AR for being able to customize.

If you are looking for a bolt action, CZ's are reasonably priced and accurate.  I'm shooting my CZ more and more and my Anschutz less and less

Another vote for 10/22 ... or a cz bolt action would be nice if you could find one!

I am going to go "old school" on you. If you can find a Winchester Model 74 semi-auto on Gunbroker or in a LGS, grab it. I have one from my youth that still is the most accurate .22 I have shot. Amazing history behind them, and a 24" barrel with iron sights is a kick in the pants! Taken a lot of gophers down with that rifle!

But, I also have a 10/22 that is a very close second to the 74... :-)

My favorite is my trusty ole Winchester Model 62A pump it’ll run and ammo you put in it. I picked it up at a pawn shop in 1979... it took me a couple months to talk him out of it. He was a collector and had a dozen of them. I use to run a 1000 to 1500 rounds a month trough it while running the feed wagon on the ranch.

A 22 cal Gas Piston or a PCP Pellet Rifle should be all you'd need
A 25 gr HP Pellet moving at 1000+ fps should dispatch a Raccoon without getting five-O getting interested
Pyramyd Air has a great selection of either

I take Squirrel and Uinta Pot Guts with my .177 Nitro Venom at 25 yrds:

10/22 and improved drop in trigger.  dime size groups at 50 feet.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?
