Brass build up causes malfunction
« on: November 15, 2020, 05:15:31 PM »
Hi Folks,

I am new to CZ’s but have enjoyed my P01 immensely!  Recently though had an issue and wanted to share in case it can help.

After about 300 rounds I had my slide lock up. It was just out of battery. It was not all the way forward and stopped conveniently so the two lines were lined up to remove the slide stop pin/lever.  The round in the chamber did not fire.  I could not move the slide manually.  It was locked up.

It took a quick disassembly, thanks to the alignment of the slide, and a hammer to get the barrel forward so I could remove the round.  So far the lead theory is a large buildup of brass in the chamber where the shoulder of the chamber becomes the barrel.  This appears to have stopped the round from fully seating.

It’s at a gunsmith to verify and I’ll let you know if this is the definitive issue.  I have used only factory rounds with it but I have a suspicion on which box it may have been. I’ll keep it marked and check it later.

Let me know if you have experienced something similar in case the lead theory is not correct.  Always good to have the collective minds here to help.

All the best,

-Bob

No brass build up is not at all what happened. We need to know the brand of ammo and bullet type. Any rounds you fire in a CZ need to be plunk tested in the chamber beforehand. This appears to be the classic issue of a round that is too long for the CZ chamber or a bullet with a wide ogive that prevents proper headspace. Read the stickies regarding this issue.

Like SVPP said, typical rounds which are too long or too fat/blunt ogive and won’t pass the plunk test for your barrel.

There is no such theory like:
Quote
"a large buildup of brass in the chamber where the shoulder of the chamber becomes the barrel.  This appears to have stopped the round from fully seating"

unless somebody squeezes the brass there....  ;)

As SI VIS PACEM PARRABELLUM said. Check ammo first.

Welcome to the Forum
As other have said, there are other issues that cause this
If you use Bare Lead Bullets, you can get Lead build-up just at the end of Chamber, just before the Rifling
This has been known to cause a Chambered Round to Headspace long, keeping the Slide just out of Battery
So tell me again how Trump was worse then the 8 years before .... AND what's coming after HIM !

i find this very difficult to believe, and i don't have an inch of the experience the others here have.

i had to look up ogive myself.

and then the use of non-coated lead bullets.

are you using reloaded rounds?

every brand of ammo i have used thus far, S&B, Winchester, Remington, Magtec, Federal, Wolf (steel case), and so on, have run darned good.

but my CZ does not appear to like the Wolf steel case, but never caused such an issue as you proclaim.
Just  getting on thru retirement., and into the sport of shooting, with anyone of my......21 handguns, either semi-automatics, or revolvers

Build up of brass sounds far fetched. As other have stated, rounds that are longer than the CZ chamber is most likely the issue.

This gentleman has touched on the 2 most common reasons for the problem you are experiencing.
most factory ammo is built to be forgiving, but not all. Plunk test it. would be my advice before you get to deep into a different possibility.
