iron sights with a red dot
« on: December 08, 2020, 11:51:45 AM »
Apologies in advance if this question has been asked. I swear I've searched and can't find an answer. My question is this: Do I NEED higher sights if i'm going to put the red dot on my 10s OR?  Or would I be able to see the OEM irons at all through the red dot, like a lower 1/3 cowitness?

The only optic I know of that works with standard height sights is the Shield RDS. All of the other optics will require suppressor height sights. CZ and HB Industries are a couple of the companies that sell the taller sights.

I think it is safe to say it depends on which red dot you use and how it is mounted.

On my P10C that Jagerwerks milled for the RMR, I had to add .265”T front sight and .360T rear sight to use the irons as BUIS (top of front post sits right below the RMR’s dot).  Those are taller than stock.

On my Sig P365 which is already milled for the Romeo 0, the red dot sits low enough to use of the factory front post and has a rear notch molded into the red dot’s body to function as a rear sight.

I have been wrastling with this dilemma as well. I somehow managed to score a p-10c OR a little over a month ago. I decided that a Vortex Venom was the RMR I wanted to go with as I like Vortex products, mainly due to their warranty policy and performance. The next step up was I would need the mounting plate and probably sights. Fortunately, CZ sells a kit that is built for the Vortex rmr. It includes front and rear sight along with the plate for a Vortex rmr.

My kit arrived, I installed the plate and front sight. The Vortex comes with hash marks on the back of the frame of rmr that serve as correct height rear sight or you can remove the rear sight or install the rear sight from the kit that is a height match of the hash marks on the rmr. I have not done that yet and I am not sure that I am. In general, I black out my rear sights on almost all my pistols. I fear scratching my slide while trying to remove the rear sight.

A friend bought the same gun, the kit, rmr at the same time I did. He went and bought a sight pusher tool that worked but was not real satisfied with it's operation. He keeps imploring me to put the rear sight on the gun from the kit. I am thinking that a brass punch with the slide in my vise might be the way that I may proceed. Friend I think already sent the sight tool back, plus he lives 1.5k miles away. So I went searching for brass punches and the cheapest was around $28. That puts me in sight pusher tool price range. Friend did find a bag of brass rods on amazon for $11 of varying sizes that would work.

It all comes back to now that I have spent an additional $300ish for an rmr will I ever use the irons again?

That's the way I feel, the red dots being made these days are super reliable.  That said, if you have a red dot on your carry pistol I can see maybe when you need it the battery has gone dead, or the shake awake function is glitchy or some such, so iron sights might suddenly come into play.  For the sheer reliability and simplicity I chose not to put a red dot on my carry firearm, but many people do.

Some of the short comings of the Vortex Venom is it is not shake awake, it does have an auto off after 13? hours. The battery has a 30k shelf life on it's lowest setting. That is about 3.5 years if you used it every day, but again the 13 hours shut off comes into play and do you carry it everyday? I have about 5 pistols in a potential carry rotation, a p-07 and 09 might be the only other 2 I would consider getting milled for a rmr.

Hell I have not even shot the darn thing yet, I might hate it!
