Strange threaded bushing?

Friend of mine just got a new Scorpion, was asking me what this piece is that was included as an extra.  It seems to have the same cross section pattern as the muzzle device/flash hider, and it's threaded.  Is it a spacer or bushing of some sort?  Thanks.

That's the 18x1 thread protector. If the OE flash hider is removed to use the 1/2x28 threads, the thread protector is installed in place of the OE flash hider.
