Ruger Mark II
« on: March 05, 2021, 03:47:20 PM »
I snagged a Mark II 5.5" bull barrel Target while picking up 10mm ammo locally. Turns out it was made in 1983 according to Ruger as the serial number did not jive with the automated lookup. Chart said 1984, but it was not.

Exterior looked pretty decent. Some worn bluing and some character marks. Barrel looked great. Inside was awful. Mummified grease in it. I picked a good deal out. Much cleaning done. I used a quart of Gun Scrubber, lotsa compressed air, and brushing.

I suspect some aftermarket Volquartsen parts, what I was told was a Clark trigger with overtravel adjustment, Clark grips, original trigger, drilled & tapped for rail, and 4 mags all came with the gun.

After the cleaning, polishing, cleaning more, lube, and assembly, I measured the trigger pull at 1lb.10oz. avg for 10 pulls. Crisp, short reset, no overtravel. No wiggle in the trigger. Cool. I put the factory grips back on as the Clark stuff just didn't cut it for me. I tore all the mags apart and cleaned them. Shot 120 rounds just to function test it. Good groups, shot a bit high & right. I did not care. Just run baby. CCI, Remington, and Aguila ammo went through it. 5 hiccups in feeding. I think I found that problem. I hope to go back out Sunday and try again.

The bottom line was $379.00. I did order a new recoil spring & rod kit. I painted a portion of the front sight red. It helped my old eyes, but a Tru Glo front is on the way. It will be a heck of a lot cheaper to shoot than anything else I currently own.

Seems to me the pistol found an excellent 2nd home where the abuse has stopped and the fun has begun!

Good job fixing that mess up.  I still have a Ruger 22/45 as a backup bullseye gun but I need to take it out to shoot it.  Not much use after I got my Kadet.

Wow! $379 for that one? I better get back with one of the old guys in our group up who’s selling his Ruger MKIII Target for $350 plus a box of my 9mm reloads. It’s very clean and he used to shoot it in bullseye competition,

He’s selling this model as pictured.

What a sweet looking gun! I'm hunting for wood grips and those bad boys are looking pretty good! It seems all I like are, Out Of Stock.

Joe,
I looked at a few new .22 1911, looked for a Kadet kit, and had no luck. I liked the 1911 I saw, but it was too much dinero in my opinion. I felt I would find one someday and there it was!

Sweet!  8)  Congratulations on your new-to-you Ruger Mark II and may it serve you well!  :)
Nice to see that you rescued yours!  :)

My late Father had a Bull Barrel Mark II very similar to yours and my Brother has it now.  It's always been a good shooter!  :)

Back in the late 1980's, I bought a used Ruger Mark II Standard, and it's been a great .22 LR Pistol, having digested many bricks of .22's and is still going strong.
Also, mine has been regularly cleaned and maintained, about every 300 rounds or so.

I've a pair of stainless 5 1/2 MKII's. I only clean mine when they begin to malfunction, this takes quite awhile, and they look nasty when disassembled. On the plus side it's about impossible to wear out a MK I or II. Looks like you've a pretty good score there.
