front site
« on: April 21, 2021, 03:45:14 PM »
I have ordered a front site for my 75b, this is the site
Meprolight Front Sight for CZ 75, 85, SP01, Green, ML17777F.S, MR-AP-CZ-ML17777FS
so what is the best way to make the "grove" for the retaining pin?
Thanks

With a triangle file
Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges - Tacitus

Inter arma enim silent leges - Cicero

I wasn't born in America, but I got here as fast as I could.

Generally this is acceptable and the way that i do it for most sights. Meprolight sights (CZ factroy night sights) are special in that they are exceptionally hard. Apparently when you attempt to drill a Meprolight front sight with it installed the hardness of the sight material can cause the drill to walk out and damage the front sight retaining pin hole in the slide. This is why it is a good idea to fit Meprolight front sights while they are not installed.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Also the heat from drilling can harm the Tritium Capsule

I've fit several Mepro's by drilling and had no issue when using a good bit. The groove is cut quickly with little heat build up. I've had my guns hot enough from shooting to blister your fingers touching the barrel so I doubt your going to overheat the sight enough to kill the lamp.
However I think on CGW's website they now advise against drilling the front sight because they've experienced some damaged slides and bushings so there's that to think about.

So far I've not damaged the slide installing night sights

I have broken one drill bit and bent a couple of those small punches driving the new pin back in.  Or was it driving the old pin out???

Best I can say is drill slowly.  Trying to get through quickly might result in more deflection of the drill bit and "helping" the tip try to change direction a little bit.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

it did not take long to file the groove for the pin, I dont think its worth the risk to save a few minutes by drilling.
