Alternative .22lr
« on: June 07, 2021, 02:48:31 PM »
With the cost of ammo thru the roof (although I have seen more availability and lower prices lately) a number of us have switched to .22LR guns for our Tuesday night shoot.  I started with and M&P22 that I already had and as nice a gun as it is I was fixing feed issues continually - very tiresome and frustrating. So having heard good things about the Taurus TX22 I went looking, only to find out that the TX 22 Competition now exists. Even more important was a local shop had some in stock (on sale no less).  I am not about to suggest that Taurus builds a gun of CZ quality but I am here to suggest it is a VERY serviceable gun. Out of the box it works and works well. The exciting part for me is that any number of after market parts already exist (The Standard and Competition sharing most parts - except the barrel).  Sights, triggers, grip traction, compensators, magazine extensions and this is work a person can do at home (with a few minor tools).
If you want to train via live fire this is certainly worth looking into!

We have had a tx22 for almost a year now with a couple thousand plus rounds. Few issues at first when it was brand new... First couple hundred rounds. Now it runs great and will shoot anything we give it. We also have a tippmann m4-22 that has been doing well.

Wierd. I have had my M&P full sized for 4 years now and it has chewed up everything I have thrown at it. I can say the same for my CP33.

The Gen 5 Advantage Arms kit needed quite a bit of a break in at first, but it has been working well as of late.

I shoot a CP33 and a TX22 Competition in Steel Challenge. I much prefer the Keltec, but it requires 40gr or heavier ammo to run reliably. With ammo in short supply, I bought the Taurus to be able to run whatever .22 ammo is available. For the most part,  the TX has run reliably with a few failures to extract/eject during matches. Hopefully that will be fixed with a Tandemkross extractor that arrived today.
Both guns are reliable, fun, and accurate with very respectable triggers. The TX makes a great tactical trainer for someone who carries a P10C, while the CP33 is superior for Steel Challenge. As can be expected, it's fun to compete against and beat guys using 2k-$3500 custom guns with a pistol that they say is junk.

welcome,

live long enough and shoot long enough with various toys, you may figure out not alot of guarantees when it comes to guns.

you would hope/wish/dream/think it was true, but eventually you will figure it out - or not.

if you find a RF that shoots reailablity, then consider yourself lucky and cherish it.

i have the M&P 22 and may other 22s.  So i just enjoy what i can when i can.

good luck on the taurus...

I have a Kadet kit for my P-07, two Phoenix Arms HP22s (laugh at them, but keep them clean, lubed often, and standard velocity and they are great little guns.   Last year I got into shooting S/A revolvers.  Have two Heritage Arms Rough Riders (with the .22 mag cylinder) and a Ruger Wrangler.  Now they are great to teach new shooters and to just spend an enjoyable day at the range for next to nothing cost wise. Looking for a Bersa 22 Thunder next.

22 LR? Oh yeah nothing better than my old 4 inch S&W model 18. Shoots the cheapest cheesiest ammo that $3K top of the line competition models just choke and die on.

Reliable, yes. Competitive, not so much.  8)

.22 handguns?

My oldest is the Ruger Mk1 5.5" bull barrel.  Used to love Remington Thunderbolts.

My next oldest is a Jennings J22.  That was my summer time uniform shirt pocket pistol.  The piece of hard plastic that went in the left uniform shift pocket to keep the badge from dragging it down worked perfectly to conceal the little J22.  Two spare mags in the right shirt pocket.

It would keep them all in the black on a 25 yd. pistols target - at 12 to 15 ft. an it was as reliable as anything else I carried in the duty holster (Combat Commander .45, 686 4", M29 4") which means I only shot it at the range but it worked every time with hollow points.

M&P .22 is the newest/last .22 handgun I bought (several years ago).  Only fired it 3 times.  It ejected the empty and chambered the next round just fine.  Wait, make that 2 times.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Well the gun is exceedingly reliable and it's plenty accurate so I disagree on it's ability to compete. No it's not nearly as fast as an auto loader and it's limited by capacity but there are also revolver class competitions so there's that and being competitive has MUCH more to do with the shooter than the equipment.

My Ruger MkII Standard has been my favorite .22LR Handgun and has digested bricks of .22LR over the years with no problems, except the occasional dud rounds that crop up in .22LR ammunition.
Also, my Ruger 10/22 is my favorite .22LR Rifle.

I'm fond of my 25 year old S&W model 41.  It has two barrels a 5" bull barrel with a 3 moa red dot and a 7 1/2" with iron sights and runs about any SV ammo 100% but loves CCI SV and SK standard plus.

I looked at a S&W Model 41 before I decided to buy a Black Mamba for Volquartsen. So far it has been reliable and eats any .22LR ammo I have used.

I got more into 22 within the last year as well. My primary handguns are the beretta 92 and CZ P07/P09. I started off looking for a P07 or P09 Kadet kit and could never source one. So, I bought a Beretta 92 22LR kit and have loved it. It has run 100% and I have zero complaints. I did find a P09 Kadet kit yesterday, but think I will stick with the Beretta 92 kit.

I too have been shooting my 22s in our local ASI matches. I fortunately have 3 22s- S&W 617, 63 and Ruger MKII. All performed superbly- accurate, smooth to draw and put on target and inexpensive.  Most of all, simply just fun to shoot.

Of the 3, the 617 is my favorite.
