Important life decision, to keep or not to keep...
« on: June 28, 2021, 11:17:46 AM »
Should I keep the rear sight and have the optic mounted forward of it or delete it?
This is on my PCR.
Thank you for helping me make this heavy decision ;)

Is there enough room on the slide to mill a dovetail in front of the optic?

I’ve shot guns with the rear sight in front of and behind the RDS, and I prefer in front.  Just a personal preference, but IMO it results in a less cluttered sight picture.  The irons are just there in the event the RDS fails, so I’m OK with them being less pronounced.  I’ve also practiced shooting targets at various distances with the red dot downed off so I know how the target needs to be centered in the window.

What is the pistol being used for?  Would always prefer to have iron sights on anything I am staking my life on.  If it is a game gun, not so picky, what ever I can see the fastest.

This will be mostly for fun but also a secondary carry gun to my EDC. I think I can do ok with the integrated "sight" on the Holosun 507k and the reason I chose it is for it's reliability and size. I don't think keeping the stock rear would be do-able with that weird ramp in front of the sight taking up the space so I would probably need a different sight. I was thinking of putting a FO front and a black rear to go with the optic but heck, why go through all that if all I need is a good optic and some BUIS? I am leaning towards mounting it all the way back and getting rid of the rear dovetail. Seems the simpler thing to do and whatever I do it is essentially an irreversible mod - I am good with that since I really like the gun. I feels great and shoots great and is a looker to boot. ;)

Please post pictures when you get the project finished.  Would like to see how it comes out.  Best wishes.

Looks great! Who did the milling? What was the lead time? Any afterthoughts? Cheers.

Impact Machine did the milling. It took about 3 weeks end to end. It’s dead on and the work is very clean plus Scott is great and answered all of my questions both on the phone and via text. The guns shoots amazing and the dot works great. No regrets.

Hi Dudester

Nice looking compact, is it possible for you to post a photo of it from the rear, showing what the sight picture looks like? I'm considering the same or similar setup for my P-01 and I want to see how it looks from the rear before I commit to milling the slide. I think the 75D compact and P-01 slides are the same, but I'm not sure.

I'm familiar with the 507k as I have it on a Sig P365xl, I was considering the Trijicon R06 for the P-01 but that optic may be too large for it.

How well does the 507K’s rear sight ‘nubs’ line up with the front sight?  Did you have to go with a taller FS?

I'm curious how your fiber optic lines up with the 507k "rear nubs" too. Another question, is the 507k mounted on a plate or milled directly to the slide?

Optic is milled directly to slide. The front sight co-witnesses as a figure 8 under the red dot. It does not line up directly with the rear nub sight on the optic but it’s good enough that I could use it in a pinch. Mostly the fiber front sight helps me to get the gun on target fast and then zero in with the dot. It takes some practice but I can get accurate hits with it that I couldn’t get with irons alone.
