Identifying A Czech Made Mauser
« on: July 03, 2021, 12:52:30 PM »
Hello,

I bought an all matching Brazilian Mauser made in Czechoslovakia in 7mm Mauser (7x57) and I would like to know more about its history (when was it produced? how many were made? were they used in a conflict?). So far I found out that it could either be a Brazilian VZ 24 or a VZ 12/33:

According to wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vz._33) it could be a police carbine ("?eskoslovenská zbrojovka was contracted by the Brazilian government to manufacture 100,500 Model 08/34 police carbines") BUT my rifle is not a short rifle like the VZ 12/33. It's over one meter long (1,07 m). So maybe it is a VZ 24? Also the sights go up to 2000 m which apparently the VZ 33 variants do not. It is marked MOD 1908/34 though...

I took a couple of pictures, you can find them here: https://imgur.com/a/LwHkSKr

A little help would be very much appreciated!

I acquired a vz24 8mm Mauser and did a lot of research (outside of this forum) to learn more.

Photos here: https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=85019.msg888575#msg888575

Of all your questions, the only one that I can help with is how many were made.

The convention for serial number was:

a. Start with 0001 through 9999
b. Then add a letter of the alphabet (A-Z):  0001 A
c. When you reach 9999 A, then go to the next letter:  0001 B
d. When you get to 9999 Z, then a number, starting with 2, is added after the letter telling how many times
they've been through the alphabet:    7745 M3  (this is what my 8mm vz24 says).

This makes it  (9999*2*26 + 9999*12 + 7745) = 647,681th made.

I can see from your photos that yours will accept a bayonet.
It took some searching but I was able to find the exact bayonet for mine.

A word of caution:  research your state and local laws about affixing a bayonet (i.e. when and where you can without violating the law).
No...I didn't get in trouble because while searching for mine I learned about the various laws regarding them.

Good luck!

Thank you for your enlightening reply! It looks like they built a lot of rifles...

Also, sorry for the inconvenience caused by creating the topic in the wrong subforum.

Don't worry about it.  The moderators will move it.

That will help those looking for specific information to find it.
