Hammer spring stiffness and light primer strikes
« on: August 04, 2021, 02:48:52 PM »
SP-01 Open Racegun - So PO had the MCarbo spring kit in this gun and its been pretty great for the most part. When I got it I put fill cajun in it, but I got some light primer strikes and went back to the stock hammer spring last night. Noticeably stiffer trigger - I knew it would be different but dang it is stiffer. Just a note. We will see how she runs next match.

It's SAO, do you have a comp hammer?  If yes, then the hammer spring is really moot, you want it to function with any primer.  You might get a 1/4 lb lighter with a lighter spring, not worth it in my mind. If not, then you should invest in a race hammer.  It will dramatically improve your trigger pull feel and crispness.

I'm running 26lb main springs in my TSO's.  I'm trying to get a heavier pull but the main spring only has a subtle effect.  At least I can run any primer I want  (including small rifle if needed).

Cheers,
Toby

I have read here that in SA the hammer spring can make a difference - a heavier spring can make the trigger pull feel even more "crisp" vs. a lighter spring.

Can't say that for sure as I've not tested it in several pistols.

I do know that the hammer makes a heck of a difference.  I've got a couple of those spur hammers from CZ USA a few years back with really short sear notches in them and both are in the 3 lb. SA trigger pull range with the factory hammer springs.  So crisp you have to put the trigger pull ga. on them to believe they aren't lighter than 3 lbs.

Listen when someone suggests better hammer.  Don't forget the CGW adjustable sear if it's a safety model pistol.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

As stated by Toby, putting a race hammer will make the biggest difference. I installed a CZ race hammer on my czechmate and TSO but kept the stock hammer spring. The trigger is crisp and no problems setting off CCI small rifle primers (I use small rifle primers on my major loads).

On my shadow 2, I installed a CGW competition hammer and adjustable sear along with an 11.5# hammer spring. It also sets off CCI, WSP (rifle and pistol) primers without any problems. I’m installed the extended firing pin but kept the stock firing pin spring.

yeah, its all full cajun with race/ring hammer. I will say the trigger does seem just a tad more crisp, I don't think it will make a big difference for what this gun will be used for, but it was noticable. If it were a bullseye gun I might have a different opinion. I just got some CCP Mag primers today to work up 9maj loads with so another stepping stone in place.
