Norma Tac-22 lr ammo
« on: September 03, 2021, 11:17:21 PM »
A few weeks ago at Rural King (discount farm supply store) I saw they had some ammo in. I bought several boxes of .223 & they had bricks of .22lr. The .22lr was Norma Tac-22 & it said target on the box. It wasn't cheap ($90+tax/brick, ouch), but I bought a brick anyway as they were lead nose & not jacketed. (I only buy match grade ammo, albeit the cheaper stuff like Aguila match rifle) I checked online & found that Midway USA had the stuff for $130+tax/brick so I didn't do too bad. (Midway USA usually has some o0f the lowest prices for ammo, or at least the stuff that I buy)

Then I noticed Midway USA also sold Norma .22LR match ammo (for considerably more) & realized that I wasn't thinking when I bought the Tac-22. I saw the "target" on the box & unthinkingly bought it figuring it was match grade. I was bummed about paying that much for ammo which wasn't match grade. Today I made it out to the range & dialed it in on my CZ 452. I am totally pleased with this ammo & will be going back to Rural King tomorrow to get more of this stuff. Very few flyers, & when those were only off by 1/3"-1/2" @ 50 yds. I was consistently making 5 shot groups (50 yds) of 3/4," with many at 1/2" or less. When I say 3/4" groups, I'm talking overall (edge to edge), not subtracting the projectile diameter as the gun magazines do. On every shot, save 3 out of 100, I could hit a dime at that range every time.

I highly recommend Norma Tac-22 ammo: it is considerably more consistent than Agulia match ammo, and Fiocchi match ammo. Likely many other brands too. When I checked the reviews on this stuff, all of the low ratings were from people complaining about it not cycling the action in semi autos. Well, duh: match grade ammo (which this really isn't) is not meant for that.

Regarding Tac-22 not cycling semi-autos, its target market is precisely that...semi-autos. It's in stock everywhere because it's grossly over priced, even in the current market. Some Rural Kings have reduced the price from $9.99/bx of 50 to $6.99/bx. Mine wasn't one of them, hopefully yours is since you like the stuff.

Fortunately for me, I had a stash of Norma Tac22 long before the events of late 2019.  I've shot Tac22 in my bullseye match gun--a 75B Kadet--for nearly 10 years.  It has been excellent, as long as the ammo isn't cold in a stiff semi auto pistol.  I bet I've bought 40k rounds of the ammo, but not at today's prices.  I've also used the Norma Match at 50 yards for bullseye with excellent results.  But the only 100-10x I've ever shot at 25 yards in practice was with Tac 22 in a Kadet.  Not changing.

It is normally $40-50 USD for Norma tac-22 and $15-20 more for Norma match.

I refuse to pay double much less substantially more than double.

They did. I bought another brick today. Came to $76.xx total. They had it on sale. They said it was being cancelled because Biden prohibited the importation of Russian ammo. Norma is not made in Russia, but Rural King doesn't understand that.

And the last time you bought Norma .22lr ammo was when?

Good price for today I guess. I think tac-22 is $5.99 a box ammo at most.
I d give $55 a brick right now if I could find it.

As far as cycling.  There are two of us shooting 22lr on Tuesday night and if we want to be confident that whatever we are shooting will cycle it is Norma-Tac22.  Taurus TX22 Comp., S&W MP 22, S&W 15-22, no problems what so ever.  It was reasonably priced (compared to everything else) and available in September 2021, so far in October it is not looking as promising.

Match ammo for a .22 rifle is always 40gr lead, with a velocity generally around 1040 fps. The big difference in true "match" and non-match is the lubricant.

Some of my favorite, low-cost ammo is Federal Auto Match in the 325 round bulk box, which I take and add an Alox-type bullet lube to.

Here's the proof... Young lady visiting my Youth Program to shoot for the very first time. Never held a gun before in her life.

She had an outstanding 50ft target result. So I asked her to shoot the 3/4" dia colored office label on the backboard, which was a measured 75ft away. She took 3 shots only...

Had an opportunity to shoot a buddy's 457 MTR yesterday at 50yds. Wow, what a nice rifle. CCI SV consistently yielded 1/2" or better. TAC22 and S&B the best I could do was 3/4".

Your mostly right with this sentence

The big difference in true "match" and non-match is the lubricant.

Wrong here……….sorry………

I’m not going to type a story to explain but lube is only one possible variable.  What I will say is there is no free lunch and for ammo to be true target ammo every thing about it must be consistent and for that you will pay $$$$$$$……

Have a truly blessed and wonderful day…….

James……
