Tricking out at 99041 Steel Frame P-01 for IDPA Competiton
« on: October 12, 2021, 07:53:12 PM »
Honestly, I don't know where else to put this, Gunsmithing, Competition, Here.  Sooo, here it goes.

I am in the process of acquiring a Steel Frame P-01. I hope CZ brings more of them in but I got tired of waiting.

For the last few years I have been competing with a P10C (several actually) and I hold them in high regard as rugged, reliable, and high performing firearms. However... I keep wondering if I could run a heavier gun with a better trigger just a little quicker.  And right now, after a lengthy struggle with Covid19, I'm in a great position to spend some time doing serious equipment evaluation.

The rules I have to contend with for modifying the firearm are pretty loose, mostly related to dimensions and weight except that I must retain the function of the firing pin block and any other safety present on the tool.

First Question: SAO vs DA/SA

Follow-up Questions: Parts list.  What should I be stuffing in this thing? Is it a mix and match of CZC & CGW stuff or fully one or the other?

Please Help, CZ Gurus!

I compete in ASI which is similar in format, but not rules.  Most shooters go SAO.  I shoot SA/DA, what I give up in speed I gain in accuracy and confidence in my defensive pistol.  Last three matches I have gone zero down for the match, but my times are not as competitive as I would like.

Think you will be a winner which ever way you choose.

Ultimately I bet you are right in that SAO v DA/SA is largely moot. DA would never naturally occur anyway which really leaves the only material difference being trigger reach preferences. I think SAO flat triggers get the nod here, but subjectively and maybe not enough to matter.

I’ve shot my P01 Omega, P09, PCR, SP01T- all decockers and start w/ DA first shot naturally.  I have no issues doing so ( also shoot revolvers too ;D)

With DA/ SA you can shoot SSP. SAO you must shoot ESP (or CCP if it fits the box)

I recommend trying both start conditions and see what suits you best

Re parts, I’m partial to CGW pro kit- most of my guns have it.

I think I'm leaning the same way, getting to choose my start condition gives me some flexibility too. I'm not new to the DA/SA platform in competition. I used to shoot decockers exclusively after an unfortunate load and make ready DQ with 1.75lb SA Shadow Custom that I had to manually decock for SSP.  So I shot the SP-01 in SSP and the P-01 in CCP.  I still have the P-01 too, and it's getting freshened up for testing as well.

The only remaining , and perhaps unanswerable, question, aside from finding a safety profile I prefer, is whether or not the SAO trigger experience is just plain better.

I might look for a standard compact or sp-01 for better side-by-side testing, because I don't think I'll ever trust the answer I come up with without comparison data.

Used to be a couple threads here - that doing a search isn't finding for me - on converting the steel framed guns to SAO.

There was a steel framed P01 looking gun but marked CZ75 Compact on the slide.  I had two of those and converted one to SAO.

Then the steel frame P01 slide marked pistols came out later.  Seems like one or more of those got a thread, too, where the owner modified theirs.

Here's a link to a thread I did find with a list part of the way down the first page with parts/names/links to the parts and links to threads on polishing/modifying.

https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=82600.msg609484#msg609484

Mine was not as "pretty" as the one in a thread done prior that the OP did a lot of work to include parts/descriptions in for his conversion.  I mostly just copied the info in that thread, but I'm not finding it.

Picture of the one I converted, for inspiration?  Or just to get an idea of what it could look like.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
