what is the ideal HD CZ pistol?
« on: December 12, 2021, 06:15:09 PM »
A few parameters for this question:

- Must be an actual pistol, not an ATF definition of "pistol". So no scorpions.
- Must be under $1500, to include every add-on (ie: red dot + light and/or laser). So high-end competition stuff is a no go.
- The add-ons can be any route at all. Any base pistol + any add-on you can think of as long as it's available.
- Compactness is irrelevant. Not carried concealed / never in a competition / solely focused on home defense.

What do you think? What setup would be ideal? What is the ideal base pistol and what would you do to it while staying under the price point?

I was eyeing something like the SP-01 competition pistol with a 507 holosun on it / but let me know if I'm going astray or if you'd go in a different direction. Yeah I know it has the word "competition" which suggests it is geared more towards that than HD but what do you think a better choice might be?

EDIT: Minor note and not a dealbreaker, but if possible, I would prefer to have a manual safety.

SP-01 Tactical would be my first choice.

SP-01 if you want a manual safety.

And above all....Cajun Gun Works is your friend!!!

You'd cajunize an SP-01 as much as possible instead of going the route I was looking at (SP-01 competition)? I was looking at the competition/red variant precisely because it looked to be a shortcut of that process... the CZC trigger work instead of CGW being the main difference.

Do you think standard SP-01 + CGW is a better buy for the same result?

I’ve been using my SP-01 Tactical for my home defense pistol. It’s been on my night stand not too long after I got it in September. I replaced the luminescent sights with Tru Glo Tritium Pro and did the CGW Spring Kit last week with the extended firing pin.
I also have a 870 Tac 14 with a Arm Brace for HD.

I’ll carry the SP-01 in a leather High Noon IWB when taking out the trash or going out to my car at night.

For a home defense pistol, I'd go SP-01 tactical all the way. It will work great right out of the box.

I prefer doing all work myself and used cajun parts to do it. The upside to this is you learn how the pistol works.....inside and out.  ;)

Also...I do not recommend a really light trigger for the purpose you have described, But SMOOTH is a different story.

Another vote for the SP-01 (though I’d go Tactical, but that’s just me). Starting with a lightly used example will save you some money, and using CGW should let you spec out the build exactly how you want it.

P-07 or 09.  I do not use dots on my defense pistols, so my Shadow 2 would qualify nicely.  My P-07 is my carry gun.  Have a fellow competitor who shoots his home defense pistol in competitions and it is a P-09. He does pretty well with it.

My choice is simply a P09. It’s stock except for a FO front sight. It also has a streamlight TRL 1 attached to it.

I shot it recently at one of our IDPA matches, and it didn’t disappoint.

I also agree with those advocating the SP01- it too can serve admirably

Mine is a P10C with +5 mag extensions, 507C, Olight PL Mini, HBI trigger, all Cajun internals and PM extended barrel.
For edc, the light comes off and a std capacity mag is used. I also use it for competition. I love my hammer fired steel framed CZ's, but the P10C is like a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. It just works...

My goto HD pistol's a P07 with an Olight Baldr Mini. Dependable, accurate, and readily replaceable when it gets seized by the police. I'm in NJ, so if it gets used, I will be prosecuted and may not see it again even if acquitted !

Although it does not meet the OP's requirement to have a safety, my 97 BD is always ready for things that go bump in the night.

Read Mas Ayoob on messing with stock triggers.    The only thing I've done with carry gun triggers is replace the stock P-07 trigger return spring with a CGW spring.    Doesn't impact pull weight measurably and makes the gun more reliable.

Depends a lot on how much you practice.    I like dots with back up iron sights.    But I dry fire about 4 hours a week and shoot a couple hundred rounds a week.   I compete with DA/SA guns.     But all my defensive guns are striker now.    This is mainly for weight.    I carry all of the guns that I use for any other home defense uses.    It's also so I can hand one of my defense guns to my wife, if needed.    She doesn't do DA guns.
