P01 Omega with a TLR7 ( I know there are old threads)
« on: January 27, 2022, 02:07:20 PM »
I searched, found several old threads, started to post in the newest one from the middle of last year and got a red box/red letter warning that it was an old thread and I should consider starting a new thread. Oh well.

For some reason I can't really explain well I recently ordered a new TLR-7.  My intent was to put in on the UG P01 Omega.

The light came in, I removed the Olight Valkyrie and installed the TLR-7.

I can't say how big, or little, my hands might be.  I know that when I see threads/posts about the long trigger reach on a CZ I sort of shake my head in wonder because I never noticed that.

But, the TLR-7 switches ar so far forward (with the light as close to the trigger guard as it will go) that I cannot reach the right side switch without twisting my grip around the frame to get that trigger finger in the right spot to push the switch forward to turn the light on and off.  Tried it over and over.  I can put my finger tip on the switch but don't have the finger reach to move the switch enough to operate it.

There is another Streamlight with a different switch set up, the TLR-7A.

Anyone had this issue and bought the A model?  Did it cure the reach issue?

Thanks.

I have the TLR7A on my PO1 Omega and the switch is just past the trigger guard (towards the rear) no problems with reach.

100% get rid of the TLR-7 and replace it with the TLR-7a.  The 7a's switches are so much better.  Not only in terms of shorter reach, but activating them is much easier.

Yeah, I'll have to check the TLR-7 on some other pistols to see if I can reduce the reach enough to operate that switch with the right trigger finger.

Thanks for the TLR-7A suggestion/info.

Haven't really used the TLR-7 yet but I like not having to pull it off the rail to change batteries.

Funny, I read the C123s are good for years "on the shelf".  While fiddling with this TLR-8 I went to the bedroom and pulled the P09 9MM with the TLR-1 on it out of it's cubby hole for a comparison and found the batteries were dead.  It's been in the cubby hole, unfired, for a couple years.  I get it out now and then, field strip it and lube it before putting it back.  The batteries went dead just sitting in there.  Check your lights, guys, strange things happen sometimes.

I believe once the battery is screwed in tightly, there's some power drain.  Streamlight acknowledges this by instructing you to loosen the facecap approximately ΒΌ turn to the detent.  However, if you hear that bump in the night, you'd have to remember to screw it back tightly before turning it on.

CR123 is definitely old technology that needs to go away in home defense accessories.

Well, TLR-7A ordered.  We'll see how it works for me.

I had the original TLR7 a few years ago and got rid of it due to those switches.  Basically I could only work them with my support hand thumb when I had a two handed grip, which is the preferable way to work the switch on these lights, but is impossible if you only have a one-handed grip.

I currently use the Olight Baldr Mini but would consider trying a TLR-7A or TLR-8AG if I was looking to replace it.  These all have ambidextrous switches that you can actuate with your index finger if you only have a one-handed grip.

That's where I'm at.  I can use the support hand, but not the firing hand.  That new light should be in tomorrow.

New TLR-7A is on the P01 Omega.  Works great.  Got some pics to show why the TLR-7 didn't work for me.

P01 with the Valkyrie PL-Mini.  You can see the switches stick back past the front of the trigger guard.  No issues pushing that switch down to operate it.

P01 with the TLR-7.  Switches are out in front of the trigger guard and must be pressed inwards to operate the light.  My fingers just aren't long enough.

Picture of the TLR-7 with my trigger finger fully extended and I tried to stretch it as far forward as possible without changing my grip on the pistol.  That vertical bar out past my finger tip has to be pressed inwards.

P01 with the TLR-7A.  Switches push downwards like the PL-Mini and stick back past the front of the trigger guard (also like the PL-Mini.)

Tried the TLR-7 on the P07 and it's a no go there.  I'm going to try it on the FNS and M&P pistols to see how it does.

Oh, got the "bright" idea of using the extra switch supplied with the TLR-7A on the TLR-7 and that doesn't work.  The actual electrical switch inside the housing is different between the TLR-7A and TLR-7.  Just like the switches on the housings are located diffrently and operate differently, the actual electrical switches on the internal boards are located in different spots and operate differently.

If you've got long fingers or operate the light with your support hand then the TLR-7 shouldn't be an issue.
