Trying P01 and P07 at my local gun range
« on: February 15, 2022, 02:29:25 PM »
Looking for compact pistol with decocker I tried both P01 (not Omega) and P07 at my local gun range. Some thoughts.

(1) While I love how P01 fit my hand, other controls like slide release and decocker are not so convenient to reach.
(2) P07 grip is Ok, while not so great as P01, but more convenient decocker and slide release.
(3) Trigger on P01 is horrible, both DA and SA. I'm actually surprised, because this is range gun, so I suppose break-in already happened. May be it is not serviced and lubricated well.
(4) Trigger on P07 is amazing, both DA and SA. One of the best triggers I tried. I'm seriously convinced that Omega trigger system makes this difference.
(5) I'd love to try P01 with Omega system, that's probably the best of both worlds, but very hard to find on sale.

Greetings !
Wife and I each have P07s, Her trigger was fantastic out of box, but mine almost got returned. It took a lot of polishing and about 1500 rounds to get somewhere close to hers. Now with about 5K rounds downrange, it's become a sweet shooter. Omega triggers can vary immensely !

I have my second (and forever) P-01, both bought used and stock.  The second trigger was noticeably better than the first, and then I also installed an MCarbo spring kit which made it even better.  Maybe not CGW better, but certainly good enough for a layman shooter like me.  The installation was pretty simple, even for my first time taking a gun down any further than a standard field strip for cleaning.

I think DA/SA triggers have a lot more variation in out-of-the box trigger quality than strikers.  But it might just take just a little tinkering to make up the difference.

I have a P01 Omega, PCR and a P09( not a P07, but same action, only longer barrel and grip)

My P09 is stock and is fine. Both the P01 Omega and PCR have been cajunized. The P01 was on par with my P09 trigger wise, but I wanted more- glad I did it, but wasn’t necessary. My PCR I bought used and became a project gun with CGW pro package, hard chromed and CZC sights. Am very happy with outcome.

To your specific Q, trigger quality varies amongst CZs- I’ve been lucky, but others less so.  If you can try before you buy, I’d recommend that.  If not it’s luck of the draw ordering on line. That said, you can get better triggers through dry firing a bunch, and CGW or CZC enhancements.

One doesn’t need the full meal deal either to improve the trigger.  I installed CGW’s ultra light kit on my 75B stainless and am impressed with results - not as refined as the pro package, but impressive for cost and level of effort.

Good luck & let us know what you decide.

Thank you, everyone for the feedback.

Good luck & let us know what you decide.

Well, it's a tough choice. CZ P01 are bought like hot cookies, so only online orders are available. You can't just come to the shop and try. (And I can't find P01 Omega even online).
I'm satisfied with by full size guns (don't need another range gun), so looking mostly for the carry (self defense). Picatinny rail is must as I'm spoiled with my Olight Baldr Mini.

I always wanted steel (alloy) compact, so was looking at P01/PCR and made choice in favor of P01 because of the rail.
Never looked at P07 (polymer frame) before, but now thinking about it because of fine trigger.

I'm also big fan of Walther P99 AS with DA/SA striker, but this gun is discontinued unfortunately. So, I started looking at Canik TP9DA which has the same concept.
Unfortunately, I can't find it anywhere to try. I tried another TP9 (Elite Combat) with red dot installed and it was great. Very nice trigger. But I'm looking for a handgun with DA/SA and decocker.
One concern against TP9DA is that it is bulky (not exactly compact, especially grip). So it's harder to conceal. I don't think my wife will like to carry it.

I already have Sar CM9 Gen2, it is nice gun, but very large grip for concealed carry. And it is heavy even though it is polymer. And no decocker.

I'm also looking for a carry gun for my wife. It might be another gun, but it would be great if we both will love it.
My wife tends to look at miniature guns, but I always tell her than smaller gun means more recoil and worse accuracy.
And she shoots better than me from the large guns like Beretta 92FS or 1911 (9mm). But with smaller polymer like Cm9 Gen2 she struggles with accuracy, while I absolutely enjoy it.

While my wife was comfortable (and quite proficient) with my P07, I encouraged her to try some other pistols to find her own "match". She tried several more over the next year and got her own in ODG.  She did like the HK P30, but not enough to offset the the advantage of duplicate arms.
I put a Baldr mini on mine and getting one for hers since it has proven to be stable and reliable. My only complaint is the low battery indicator is too dim to be of any use, so I make sure to keep it charged.

I don't own a P-01 so cannot comment on that, but as for the P-07 it is commonly known that they break in nicely with a lot of dry or live fire, so nothing surprising that you were impressed by the rental P-07 at the range.

Personally I tried a rental P-07 at a local range before I bought my first one, and I thought the SA was great, but the DA was only so-so, compared to ex. my 25-year-old J-frame with countless rounds fired and a spring kit installed.  Now the two P-07's I own with thousands of rounds through them and CGW springs and DA rollers installed, they give that J-frame a run for its money.

So far nothing I've held/handled fits or feels so good in my hand as a P01.

But, I carry a P07 because I still shoot it better.

I won't stay "hold out for an Omega P01" as we all know even if a shipment comes in at some point getting one can be pretty darned hard sometimes.

If you really want the Omega, go online, search all the sellers and for the ones that have the option to get an e-mail when they get back in stock choose that option and give them your e-mail address.  That's how I got my second one.  I came in from outside chores, and saw I had an e-mail from one of the vendors.  I clicked on the website, saw they had some in stock, grabbed my wallet, ordered one, checked to see my e-mail order confirmation at came here to post that link to the vendor in case anyone else wanted one.  By the time I got on the forum here, started my thread and went back to the vendor's website for the link they had sold out.  Had I walked in 5 minutes later to cool off I would not have gotten that black P01 Omega.  So, be quick when you see that e-mail.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I had a P-01 Omega that was nice, but I've always shot my OD Green P-07 better, so she's a permanent keeper.

Funny ain't it.  We talk so much about how important it is that a pistol fit/feel good in our hands and yet the P07/P09 shoot so well in spite of not being that ideal fit.

Absolutely true, I like "classic" look of P-01 and it is so enjoyable at hand, but agree that P-07 shoots better and even felt less recoil. That also confirmed my wife (she also tried both P-01 and P-07). For her it was easier to handle reload of P-07 because of better slide serrations. It's a huge dilemma for me - I can't afford to buy two almost identical guns (with current skyrocketed prices) and both choices have their pros and cons.

For those who carry P-07 - did you have any issues handling it with sweaty (wet) hands? Because of flat rectangular grip.
Also which one is more concealable? I suppose P-07 is a bit thinner in grip.

I have a solid chunk of fat, so appendix carry is not for me - most likely carrying at 4-5 o'clock position.

Question 2: If I decide to go with TP9DA (V2) - what do you think about grip and overall ergonomics? Isn't it too large to conceal? What about recoil comparing with P-01/P-07.
Unfortunately, can't find it anywhere to try - so it would be a blind choice.

Yes, ergonomically the P-01 Omega felt incredible in my hand, but I only keep pistols that I shoot the best. For me, P-07 all the way.

Rcher, for a few years I sort of chuckled at people who claimed their P07 needed some type of grip enhancement.  Never had an issue till one day when it was really hot/humid at the range.  After a bit of (good bit) sweating I noticed my groups opening up some and found I was having to re-grip the pistol every two or three rounds.  It was moving in my hand (my favorite P07 is a .40 S&W and has a good bit more recoil than the 9MM P07 I sometimes carry/shoot).  I ordered Talon grip panels for it and that seems to have taken care of it.  However, if I was ordering them again I'd order the rougher ones.  My P07 .40 has the smoother/softer version of the Talon grips on it.  When I bought a set for my P09 .40 I bought the ones that have the sandpaper like finish and liked them much better.  Since then the sandpaper finish Talon grips are all I've bought.

A bit more info - the loads I shoot in my .40 S&W P07/P09 are sort of like shooting a .shorter barreled .357 magnum.  The P09 would actually pinch/bite my trigger finger enough it was painful to shoot more than a magazine through.  Solved that with a DUTY model trigger.  But the pistol still rocks pretty good with that Blue Dot powder.  The rough Talon grips work.  No issues with them coming loose on the CZ pistols.

Some people use those slip on over the frame finger groove sleeves but I've never really found any finger groove things that fit the size of my fingers.  Hated that darn Glock.  Two fingers in the grooves and two fingers on top of the bumps/humps.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
