457 series rimfire stock finish
« on: February 24, 2022, 08:53:04 PM »
What type of finish is used on the standard stocks? In other words what material is it? Is it an oil type or some sort of polyurethane or laquer or something else? The stock on my Varmint, which I havent actually brought home yet and is my first CZ long gun, is an absolute stunner and I want a high gloss finish on it and not the semi gloss rubbed look, if its possible without a full strip hopefully. Im a lifelong woodworker, a wooden shipwright and an antiques conservator of 18th and 19th century French, Belgian and English antique furniture so I know my way around the woodshop fairly well

Hey Arko,  Your question stuck in my mind this past week and I just ran into part of the answer.  You prob have a good idea of how you want to re-finish, but here is a thread about CZ457 finish.  Per this, the 457 is a Lacquer finish and you can read it all here - http s://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1148451
I have an older - -2017 - 455 Lux in SS that just needs more wax  ::)

Thank you fasteddie, been over there reading, alot. My stock literally looks black in low to mid light. It is just much darker than any stock Ive seen on others. Im trying to find out more about the stain/dye CZ is using to help me with its removal as well.

Ive been trying also to photograph the stock and its proving difficult for me.  The wood is very nice but maybe not as nice as I initially thought.  Maybe I should ask the seller to speak to the person he has taking pics because they did a great job. Do I think its still worth a refinish? I surely do. Its not something I would rush to do so I have more reading to do.

Thanks for the link

A shame you've got a very dark stain that makes the figuring hard to see.  I once had a rifle like that and found it simplest to just sand it down.  Then a tung oil rubbed on stayed pretty light.  However, I didn't have checkering to worry about on that one.  Maybe you can get some of the stain off with alcohol or a solvent ?
Good luck,
Ed
