I ordered me 2 of these fine rifles last week one a fixed stock and the other a folder.
I cannot wait till it gets here. I will be sure to post pics and a   range report.
Nice forum you guys have here very informative.

Are both rifles CZ-USA builds?  Just curious.  It sounds like you may be buying from Atlantic.  The Atlantic rifles use the Czech receiver, but they may have a different compliance parts package.  That is, I'm not sure if the Atlantic builds use magazine parts for compliance.

I assume both rifles are CZ built. I bought both off of gunbroker as my dealers around here wanted 900+ for one. the pics on the auction seemed like they were both CZ boxes. Now I'm worried a little. I guess I will find out later this week. (crosses fingers)

Sorry for the scare.  I didn't know CZ-USA was selling folding stock versions.  (That made me think of Atlantic Arms.)

All -

Just purchased a VZ58 from a private party, NIB, in the grease.

First look upon opening the box, "this thing's smaller than my Ruger 10/22"!

So clean up gun and familiarize.

It is shorter than the 10/22.

Unloaded, the 10/22 weighs 2.4 kilos.

Unloaded, the VZ 58 weighs 3.13 kilos.

My 10/22 is actually a .22 magnum.

The VZ 58 is a .308.

And I'm thinking I just shelled out 800 bucks............

Eeeesh.

So I took it out behind the house to

See just wottinhell I got.

Wow.

Freaking tackdriver.

Minimum recoil.

I ran the first two clips freehand at a 6" x 8" cardboard box at 40 yards

(which held some of the mysterious woman things my wife orders in,

and which arrive UPS)

And bleeped if 51 out of 60 shots hit the box, most within a 4" circumference.

Now my complaints.

The first two clips had a hard time feeding.

2 shots, 3 shots, 4 shots and the point of the round would be jammed against the feed ramp bevel.

The third and fourth clips fed just fine.  And box #2 was just as perforated as box #1.  So I dunno.

The feed ramp bevel seems kind of abrupt and squared off.  But I don't know the weapon, yet.

Anyone have an educated guess about this?

Second bitch.

The stock is definitely to short for me and the drop is too shallow - I ended up kind of contorted with the

Heel of the stock way high on my shoulder.

So I need to figure out that geometry, and find something which works.

All in all,

Out of the box the gun is 90th percentile.

And the tuning of it will be just plain fun.

And a postscript; my wife's opinion.

She likes to shoot what I have from a selfdefense viewpoint.

So, to call out a few:

Doesn't like my P01's - too hard on her wrists.

Shot the Dirty Harry wheelgun once - that was it.

The Winchester riot gun - will use it in extremis.

.22's, of course, are just fine.

So we go out back yesterday, and ran a clip through the VZ.

Results:

The carbine fits her like a glove (she's 5'7" and I'm 6'2").

She's got zero problem with the recoil (and this is a girl who, lo these many years ago had a boyfriend

Returned from 'Nam with M16 in possession, which they would shoot out in the desert).  Her comment

"Way easier to handle than the M16."

Her only bitch was that the weapon was truly loud

And that she was gonna get a goood set of earplugs

Before practicing more.

And she did absolutely demolish yet another small cardboard box @ 40 yards.

Now - and I'll be as diplomatic as I can be here -

She's got a an extremely small 6 in front of her age.

And its already headed the direction that the VZ

Is "her" weapon.

So, I'll lay it on you;

In this family, Grandmother's

Weapon of choice is the VZ.

Life never ceases to astonish me..........

I'm looking to purchase a vz58 this month. The previous comment about the length of pull and drop on the stock has me a bit concerned, but then I'm only 5'8". Unfortunately no one in my area has one I can actually handle before buying. I should be OK in the fit department. Have more folks had problems with the factory mags feeding properly? I own an HK91 and the HK USC so the price of the CZ seems quite reasonable to me. Having handled and fired several AKs and M16s I wasn't all that impressed. The little vz just appeals to me for size, weight and CZs reputation for building a fine weapon. My other CZ rifles have been great so I have a good feeling about this one as well. Curious about the magazines though.  ???

The LOP on combloc weapons is a surprise / PITA to a lot of Americans.  We are -on average- much larger than the intended users.  We also don't wear heavy winter clothing while shooting (for the most part).

Really? .308 NATO?

So it comes in 7.62x39 or .308 NATO?

Does the VZ58 have a milled receiver?

If not, why such a price difference with other AKs?

Since it uses different mags than a standard AK, are other parts interchangable with other AKs?

Can you build up a VZ58 from a parts kit with a standard AK receiver?

OK

Answers to your questions.

The VZ 58 utilizes a 7.62 (.308) x 39 mm cartridge.

Which - you are correct - differs from the NATO 7.62 x 51 mm cartridge.

The VZ 58 has a milled receiver.  The AK original and variants are all stamped.

Parts are not interchangeable; its a totally different carbine.

And, in my opinion,  much better than the AK, in all aspects.

Oh jeez -

Try to straighten this one out.

7.62 mm or .308 inches are the same bullet.

The cartridge, containing the powder and the primer, may differ.

The Czech  7.62 x 39 mm

Is a different beast from the NATO 7.62  x 51 mm.

The difference is in the cartridge, not the bullet.

Hope this helps..........

Actually the 7.62x39 uses a .310" diameter bullet, as does the 7.62 Tok (7.62x25).

The 7.62x54R and 7.62x45 (Czech) uses a .311" diameter bullet.

The 7.62x51 Nato, 30 Carbine (7.62x33) and 30-06 (7.62x63) uses an actual .308" diameter bullet.

The 7.62x38R (Nagant pistol) uses a .295" bullet.

So you see, not all "7.62 mm" are the same bullet.

In everyday gun, talk 308 refers to  7.62 x 51.       7.62 x 39 refers to  7.62x39.   ;D

I just purchased a new vz58 off of GunBroker.com today and should have it within a week. I'm looking forward to this little rifle. I also own an HK91 and HK USC so the CZ in 7.62x39 will be a nice change from .308 and .45ACP when taking a military style semi auto to the range for a day of shooting. This should be fun as well as less expensive than shooting my .308. I'll post pics once I have the rifle in hand and cleaned up.
