So I bought an A01-LD...
« on: March 06, 2022, 06:56:04 PM »
My Shadow TAC II seemed lonely, so I bought an A01-LD today to go with it. I picked up the gun used, supposedly it only had 50 rounds through it total, I'm sure that's BS, but she's in great shape regardless, and I'm kinda excited.

So here's the thing, and I didn't realize until this evening: the A01 came with a single magazine, and an aftermarket (Mec Gar) one to boot. This not out of the ordinary though, living in a capacity restricted state, a great many firearms are repacked with non matching 10 round mags, often one mag when the gun would have shipped with two or three. This was the same deal with my Shadow TAC II as well. I'm not worried about the quality of Mec Gar mags, I've used them with practically all of my CZs and CZ Clones (and Sigs, Berettas, S&W 5900s, etc...) happily, however it's not an A01 mag, or a P09/P10F mag, it's a CZ75 magazine.

My research suggests that 75 mags are not compatible with the P09/P10F platform, thus it shouldn't be compatible with the A01 either, correct? The mag locks in, and the slide locks back as normal though and appears to function correctly. Can I use 75 mags in the A01? Is there any danger to the gun if I did so? Moreover, can I use stock off the shelf P09/10F mags, or do I need to order the specific baseplates from CZ Custom for them to work?

Any help would be great, thanks!

EDIT: Photo Added, for eye candy, also tried all of the CZ75 mags I have with the Shadow TAC II, two factory, one Mec Gar, all seem to fit and function in the A01-LD

I think they use special grips that protrude into the frame to make the 75 mags work.

My A-01 came with 75 mags and different grips so they would work.  CZ custom was out of 10 round P series mags, there was a scarcity of mags for some time so it was "this is what is available".
If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.

Hmm, I see... Well shucks, I just ordered two A01 mags from CZ Custom this morning, does that mean I need to order a set of grips then too? Is there an indicator somewhere other than looking up the magwell as to whether the gun was fitted that way? Also, was this an option from CZ Custom or something aftermarket? Looking through their parts I didn't see anything like that.

It comes with grips for P series mags but they offer the 75 mags grips as well.  Also Lok offers A-01 grips that are configured for 75 series mags or p series.

So assuming that the gun came setup that way from the factory as yours did, what do I need to change to get it to accept the P series mags? Is it a matter of just changing the grips? Do I also need to swap out the mag releases too?

Also, is there any differece in function whether I use the 75 mags (if properly fitted) or the P Series ones the gun was meant to use?

If your pistol has the P series grips, the 75 magazines may work, but be a sloppier fit. So you may want to just get a P series magazine and see if it works with your gun.

I have 2 A01 mags on the way. They should be here Saturday. The thought was that one or the other will work, depending on how the gun is setup. The goal will be to restore her back to stock configuration eventually if she has been modified though.

I meant reliability-wise. Does it run well with either type of mag? Might it have issues with one type or the other?

Update: My new A01 magazines arrived this evening, and no surprise here, they fit perfectly. The gun wasn't setup to run CZ 75 mags at all, the local gun shop probably just stuffed the mag in there because it was a close fit, and figured nobody would know. Won't be buying any more expensive firearms from them I think...

I got out of the range just now, and I'm not disappointed in the least. The A01-LD is a heck of a pistol. That said, it will take a little getting used to the extra weight out at the front end compared to my Shadow TAC II, but by the end of my range time, I had a good feel for it.

It definitely shoots tighter, more accurate groups than I can with my other pistol, but the combination of front heaviness, and some bad sight picture habits had me hitting a little low to begin. Taking a different grip and making a concerted effort to make sure my front sight post was dead even with the top of the rear notch corrected the low hits. I have a bad habit of setting my front post a little lower than the top of the rear notch, but in this case, it does more harm than good.

I traded off a couple times with the Shadow TAC II, but I'm finding I like the feel of this pistol more. Definitely glad I bought it.
