Finally got my SP-01 set up how I want it
« on: June 07, 2022, 01:01:36 AM »
Hello All,

Last year I bought an SP-01. I wanted the Tactical, but I live in California, so the manual safety model was the only one I could get new.

I have been eyeing the CZ lineup since around 2001, and bit the bullet in the past 18 months [PCR and SP01].

I spent a lot of time typing, and retyping, a bunch of drivel that amounted to: Hey Look, I FINALLY got one adjusted to fit my hand relatively comfortably! :)

The BHP still feels better in my hand, due primarily to the safety being easier to reach for my shortish thumb/fingers. However, NOW this feels about as 'right' as I think it will get.

Cajun action kit installed, with Zendl SAO trigger set up for 2.5mm shorter reach than standard SAO triggers [sold out of all colors except gold- sigh], and CZ Custom wide shelf safety installed.

As a california resident, I can't get the Tactical unless it is a F2F sale, and those cost about $350 above list price right now.

For now- this and the PCR are making me happy.

Nicely tricked out.

Why would you want the Tactical version if you're running SAO?

Which shoots better — your BHP or your SP-01?

Yeah bebe! totally dig that.
but did you know you can quickly toss an S2 Mag catch in there, they are money. I had my 97 cut for one and it makes a big difference in that gun as well.. I still gotta get a magwell on my 01 too. I think the S2 magwells will fit maybe.
Anyway I just dig the 01s and love seeing people build them. The rubber grips are also MUCH better than the thin aluminum grips like on the S2 or 97s.
I totally digg the wide safety, I still gotta get one of those too. Can you roll it back and forth without having to move the thumb below the ledge.

I'll take a built 01 over a stock S2 any day....deep em spinnin!

Looks good. If you don't like the gold you can strip it and polish the aluminum I've done it before. Here's my SP01.

Sorry- I haven't been back to this board in a while.

Skookum- I wanted the tactical because of my short fingers. The trigger reach is just too far for me with the standard DA/SA Safety model, and the side safety also wasn't something I could use.

I have a PCR, which has controls like the tactical. With the CGW short reach trigger [85?] and other parts, I can operate the PCR from the decocked position with no issues, and the decocker is easily accessible for my fingers.

Until I added the very wide safety lever and this even more reduced reach SAO trigger, the safety-model was just not confidence inspiring in my use of the controls.

With the new changes, I am good with it, but the safety still doesn't feel as good as I would like: all of my other centerfire SA safety levers feel better to me, but it is now acceptable.

For a carry item, I'd prefer the tactical. For range/competition, the SAO setup is good.

As for comparison between this and my BHP, I haven't had both at the range to test them yet.

Heck, I just fired the SAO SP01 for the first time this past Friday. It operated just fine.  It was a function test at the range- only two mags, and seeing what I could do on the rifle range at the iron target at 165 yards.

I need to do a head to head of the SP01 to the BHP, as well as to my other full-sized 9mm handguns [beretta, sig, star, 1911, taurus].

Shutz85c- thank you!

newageroman- thank you. The safety does rock on with a push straight forward on the rear edge. no need to 'lift' it like on the 1911 design. Better for my thumb's control of the safety too!

I'll keep my eyes open for an S2 mag catch. that could be a good addition!

I have actually gone away from the rubber grips. I am now running some thin g10-type grips. This is the type/texture/color I have installed: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51ZuiuhATQL._AC_.jpg

Redhemi- thank you. And good to know!

ad5md- the wide safety didn't require fitting, in the sense of filing/stoning parts for the right fit. However, it required a lot of fidgeting with it. The part # from cz customs for MY pistol was: SKU 10225.

Be sure you know what you are doing when you order. They have one for other pistols also- but this is the one for mine.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Thanks for the update.

I got to try another shooters built SP-01 this weekend at a match. It had the wide safety and I'm totally sold on it. I told the couple that I wanted one like that but out of stock etc.. and the gent said, shipped from check... yup...
Ironically I have 2 tac sport wide safeties I was going to try make fit but its an excuse for another CZ down the road.
This lady also had the holosun green ring cut into the slide, fantastick! But it was still setup for DA/SA. And there was one shot that that had a high primer and the DA set it off the second time! rare to see in action but advantage there...

I shot the Bull Shadow SAO in limited minor. I didn't do all that great, but that was on me being out of practice. The gun/ammo ran 100!

Hi All,

No head to head comparison yet. I just wanted to chime in to this thread to identify something that someone PMed me about: the trigger.

It is a zendl trigger, which I bought via eBay.

I only put this here as I haven't made more than 25 posts, so I can't reply to PMs at this time.

More info when I have it for head to head comparison.
