Thinking about a red dot on my SP 01 TACTICAL
« on: July 19, 2022, 06:29:10 PM »
Been thinking and doing a lot of searching for a good dovetail mount and a red dot .  Would like to hear others opinions on what I have found in my search. I have been looking at the Holosun HS 507C and a Springer Precision Dovetail Mount SPO305-H. I'm new to the Red Dot scene and in my 60's, hoping this might be the answer to my stigmatism and aging eyes.   If anyone else has this combo ,I would love to see a photo or your just hear the pros and cons      Thanks

Not a fan of red dots on dovetail mounts.  Creates too much offset/changes the way I hold the gun too much.

I'd look into getting your slide properly milled. But if you can, try out a pistol with a 507c already on it, and make sure it will work with your astigmatism. Some folks report just seeing a fuzzy blob, and you'll want to determine that before you make the investment.

Second what Wideload says.  Have a Tactical Sport with a SIG Romeo 1 dot on a dovetail mount.  Have to spend twice the time with it to get used to the offset, before a match.

Best wishes on your project.

First of all,Thanks for the reply and advice.  Funny how someone's knowledge can flip the way you thought was best.    I have decided  to go ahead and mill my slide for the installment of HOLOSUN  HE507K GR- X2.  I know th K model has a smaller sight picture but I like the square top and for my purpose as a range toy I think I will enjoy it's low profile too.   I still have second thoughts about it's foot print and wonder if I should use a slide plate .

When I switched to RDS due to Old Eyes I rented a couple of guns at the range. It was great seeing the target and the sight at the same time once again. Installed some dovetail mounts on a 75B, a 97. Yes it takes a mag or 2 to get use to the sight alignment, but it’s only an issue if you are going to be constantly switching between RDS and nonRDS. Once you go down this path there is no looking back, only going towards the red dot light. This is the sad part for me; a shelf of great guns that are effectively obsolete. I also feel CZ has let me down by not jumping into this market. Yes they have optics ready guns (but no direct frame mount option) Yes they have tall sights. Did they put that together, No. Did they offer a model already set up with a RDS and cowitness sights, No. Left me out there guessing about sight alignments, who to use for mill job, waiting weeks or months for the mill job, and hoping that I can buy a set of sights before they go back out of stock for months at a time. That’s a long way of saying I bought a Sig 320 with all the bells and whistles that works like a champ right out of the box. Also no big issue with switching between my full-size CZ dovetail guns. I thought CZ might have jumped on the wagon by now but no. So now I will have a Canik full size on the night stand soon.

FYI I used Springer and EGW mounts. Have hundreds if not thousands of rounds with no issues. My only problems have been the RDS sights but those were user install errors. If this is just a range toy, like mine, take a another look at the full-size holosuns. That compact model is really small. I’ll probably get one to test it out eventually but dang it is EASY to pickup the dot on a full-size unit.

Presbyopia here too. I had CZ Custom mill and install Holosun 507K-X2 on my SP-01 Tactical, and the PCR I used for concealed carry.

It slowed me down at first but through dry fire repetition, I am getting more consistent in my presentation and my time is improving.

From the get go, I could reliably make head shots at 20 yards w/ the red dot--something I couldn't do with irons.

I am sold on red dots and use them for competition and carry now. There is no going back.
