1960 S&W model 14-1 Single action only
« on: September 05, 2022, 03:18:19 PM »
A local gun store has a 6" blue S&W 14-1 SAO revolver that is in about 90-95% condition no box or paper work and with a thumb rest set of stocks. They are asking $750 it locks up tight and has a like new bore is that a fair price ?

I wouldn't say the price is totally out of line especially with what some models are going for today. The most attractive thing about that gun is that being 1960 it's a Pre Bangor Punta gun which is highly desirable to S&W collectors.
Personally I'd probably try to work a better deal but in the end it would come home with me. I already have a late 50's version with a 6in barrel and it is nothing short of a complete tack driver.

The most accurate revolver I've ever fired was a buddy's M14 6".  I could have squirrel hunted (head shots) with that thing and 148 grain wadcutters on 2.7 grains of Bullseye.

I always swore if I came across one I'd buy it, but I don't shoot revolvers these days.  Or hunt anymore.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Do you think it being a single action only would add any value ?   There is no way to tell if it came that way from the factory without a factory letter but I know a few came in SAO in 1960 and 1961.

Far more were converted after the fact than were shipped from the factory as SAO. You are correct that the only way to know is to get a factory letter (which can take months), but I'd lean towards it being a conversion. The aftermarket stocks may be cool, but they reduce the value. Factory targets of that vintage can fetch $350 all on their own. These days $750 doesn't seem out of line, but I don't consider it any kind of super deal.

My '56 mdl. 14, which was my dad's carry gun during his deputy sheriff days, is the sweetest, most accurate shooter I have.
No matter where you're going, there you are.

I know they are great shooters many years ago I gave my oldest son a Model 14 on his 13th birthday he is now 54 and still has it.  Many officers from our local PD shot at the same range as we did and several of the officers didn't want to shoot with a 13 year old on the range so we waited until they were done. Then we shot the PD's qualifying course and my 13 year old  beat their best shooter My son and I made some new friends that day. I miss those father and son days thank God I've got grandchildren to make new memories with.

That price seems a bit up. 550-600 would be the best price IMHO
