HBI’s New Gas Regulator
« on: September 22, 2022, 11:21:37 PM »
Since CZ itself has been so slow to fix their problematic x39 Bren 2 gas system, (in addition to drilling a narrower 3rd gas port on the OEM gas tube) HBI has come to the rescue with their own proprietary gas regulator, which looks very promising!!! Kudos to HBI for filling the void where CZ has dropped the ball over the past 4 years!

I picked up one for my 9" 7.62x39 and another for my 14" 5.56. The one for the 9" seems to be a definite improvement. Recoil is much softer, though ejection was still erratic. Haven't tried the 14" 5.56 yet. I noticed that the ports are much larger and they seem to rely more heavily on the bleed port.

I had a really, really cool, detailed reply to some questions from one of HBI's engineers. I asked him about the possibility of a version without a bleed port, to eliminate the flash signature from the bleed port for night vision use, and he gave me a detailed reply indicating the extensive level of testing that lead up to the final design decision. He seemed to indicate that sticking with the bleed port offered two benefits: better drainage to prevent stoppages when the weapon is filled with water and a wider window of optimal operation per setting. Without the bleed port, it sounds like the gas settings have narrower windows for function.

I noticed that the packaging for my 9" gas cylinder was marked 7.62x39, 9" and 11". The 14" was marked 5.56 11" and 14".

I’ve got a 14” 5.56 with the regulator from HBI and it really is a great addition to the rifle. I did some testing with  two of My 556 cans the other day at my range and both were very pleasant. One older SiCo saker and a new CGS Helios QD. No overgassing and ejection pattern was great plus  recoil impulse was awesome. I love my scars but since I put this regulator on the Bren 2 I can really appreciate the fact that it is a better suppressor host.
Cheers!

I have an 11" in 7.62x39.
With the old regulator the ejection was very much at 1:00, but the gun was reliable.
With the HBI regulator ejection is much more at 2:30.
I've inly shot at an indoor range, so this isn't an extensive review.
I do like my Bren 2 MS.

I bought and installed one for my 762 11" gun. So far it seems nice. I like three gas settings as opposed to two. I will report after I've tried a variety of ammo. So far it's been reliable. Only one type of ammo and about 40 rounds.

So far my 11” with HBI’s regulator I haven’t had any issues with 2 different types of ammo
