Just broke slide stop pin on TSO
« on: October 08, 2022, 09:19:21 PM »
Well it finally happened, I broke a slide stop.   I run just the pin and not the lever on my TSO's.  It had just over 10k rounds on it.

I didn't notice it was broken until I got home and was cleaning the gun.   The crazy part is on Tuesday I'm flying to Alabama for USPSA nationals.

My TSO's are in 40 S&W.  I run a Wolff 16lb recoil spring and the vinyl buffers.   I shoot predominantly 170-180gr RNFP bullets loaded to about 170 pf.

I'm fortunate this happened today and not at nationals!

Cheers,
Toby

Its good you found it out before the nationals!

I have read here about some shooters using one slide stop for practice, and a new/newer slide stop for matches. The word about their life was about 5k rounds, and I would be vary of a slide stop that goes past that number.

Best of luck, by the way.

Yeah good fortune of sorts like a car battery going dead while car is parked in garage and not in some forsaken location!
"I run the pin and not the lever" can you rephrase that? Not cluing in.
Thanks!

The TSO's come with a pin that is used in place of the slide release lever slide stop.   It declutters the left side and eliminates the slide lock function all together.   I run run the pin to give my thumbs more room and to prevent accidentally engaging it while shooting.

Some Tactical Sport style pistols get run hard.

The used one I bought had broken the barrel - right were the lands/grooves start there at the end of the chamber.  The guy had been competing with it for some time and thinking about buying a different pistol.  When the barrel broke he decided to go ahead and sell it as is and move on.  I ordered a barrel from either CZ USA or CZ Custom and fitted it.  I seldom shoot it but it is a neat pistol.  If I'd thought about it longer (in between buying the pistol and ordering the barrel I'd have checked to see what it would cost to have a 9MM barrel rechambered to .357 SIG, but as usual, too big of a hurry to get it up and running.

Toby, you must have some long thumbs.  Most of the time people ask questions about buying installing a longer slide release lever/pin because they can be tough to reach.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Is that a divot? I was recently speaking with CZ USA about what precursors to watch out for regarding slide stop failures. I've never seen a good example of it.

Another thing they mentioned was the shape of the wear on top of the barrel lugs.

That divot is the recess that the spring rides in that holds the slide lock in place.  It  is machined into the pin intentionally.

Okay, I can see the beveled tip on the left. Thanks for clarifying.

As the slide moves forward and pushes against the back of the barrel it forces the barrel lug on the bottom up against the slide release/lock pin and raises the barrel up into firing position.

I'd say (wild guess) that sometimes on a "tight" pistol there's a lot of stress on that pin due to the barrel pushing forward/down on it.  Once the barrel moves into position in the slide it has a lot more support/contact area to spread out the forces of slamming into position than that poor pin does when the barrel is forced between the pin and the slide.

Rather break the pin (especially if the pistol can keep working with a broken pin) than to break the barrel.

the pin is a sacrificial part to protect the barrel. I broke one of the slide stops on my original TS (bought used, no idea how many rounds the TS has eaten over the years). Ran fine until I ran out of ammo. Only discovered the broken slide stop when disassembling to clean.
