I've read a few threads about a staggered magazine set up for the 527's ala the original Mauser type but I haven't seen or read anything about it actually being done. It would take more than just widening the magazine well and adding a spring and follower. The Zastava micro action has this arrangement for non-rimmed cartridges.

David,
Altering the mag well like that is real work.  It'd be easier to alter magazines, like the gunsmith did in the earlier post, joining two CZ mags.  I bet it would be easier to weld a CZ top to a single-stack AK magazine.  The AK mags have thicker metal, so would weld easier, but the the AK mags are different in shape it might not be do-able.

In the end, the gunsmith may have taken the best path; joining two CZ mags.
