527 Rifle - 3 Round .223 Magazine - Adapt for a 7.62x39 ?
« on: November 11, 2022, 04:49:33 AM »
As an option, I'm liking the flush-fitting 3 round magazine for the 527.  Can this be adapted for the 7.62 Russian round?

Or, can the standard 7.62 magazine be chopped, and shortened?

Pictures left over from a different discussion. You can adapt the trigger guard to a three-round magazine by removing the gusset similar to the trigger guard on the left. A work in progress. With the 7.62X39 magazine you would have to convert a 5 rounder. If you want it to fit tight against the stock, I believe you would only have a two-round capacity. If you're set on three rounds the magazine will extend by at least a half inch from the bottom of the stock. I haven't done the 7.62X39 or a 221 Fireball magazine conversion but have converted 17/22 Hornet, 17 Remington, 204 Ruger, 222 Remington magazines.

Dave,
Great info thank you. I don't want to change the trigger guard. Perhaps I'll just cut down the five round magazine to three round which looks like that might be usable with the stock trigger guard.  A compromise of sorts.

For hi-capacity:
I know Alpha produced 10 round magazines, but I heard they weren't very good.  Joining two five round magazines into a 10, sounds like an ugly solution.  But I wonder if an existing 7.62 hi-cap mag could be altered to fit the CZ magwell.

If you could somehow fit the magazines base plate inside the magazine instead of the original factory larger than the magazine well detachable magazine base plate, then the magazine could be whatever length you wished. The magazine would then look something like the Calhoon single shot adapter in the bottom middle of the photo. These fit the gusseted magazine well but sit flush with the bottom metal of the rifle. I've not tried this, just stayed with the factory style magazine base plate set up when shortening magazines and reshaping the trigger guard/mag well. Most higher capacity magazines in 7.62X39 are double stack set up and won't come close to fitting the narrow CZ single stack magazine well. Good luck with your search. If you make something work, please let us know.

Fitting the baseplate inside the mag shell is a good idea.  I'll post what I work out.l

Odd, I thought I had the only 10 round 7.62x39mm CZ 527M mag in the world, before I gave it away. That was two 5 round mags joined together, worked flawlessly. Was done by an old time gunsmith buddy of mine years ago.

AMan,
Could you see how the two pieces were joined?  I've been thinking of doing this, but fixing the two halves together present a problem.

The guy who built mine welded washers on each side where they joined. It looked terrible, but worked perfectly.

Thanks for the picture. He did good work, esp to weld the thin metal of the mag.

I've been looking at some single-stack AK magazines, but they have a lot of extra metal, beyond the thin and svelte CZ mags.  And then you still have to get them to lock in at the correct angle to feed.  I'm going to work on that approach.

The single stack AK mags go to the WASR and SA2000m variants.

He did this stock, too. This is why it hurt so much to lose this rifle...that's a spare 5 round mag in the butt.

Only one like it in the entire world...and I lost it in a pawn shop to pay medical bills.

Sorry to hear that.  In this country medicine can be expensive.  I wish you better luck.
