Flat Wire Recoil Spring Questions
« on: December 15, 2022, 01:45:11 PM »
I am a huge fan of flat wire springs, so don't want to go to round wire recoil springs in my SP-01. I understand this means I am forced to use the stock plastic guide rod. I'm having a hard time locating a variety of flat wire recoil spring weights to use in my SP-01, so my questions are:
a) is there a source of SP-01 flat wire recoil springs of various weights?
b) will something else work, i.e. a Glock recoil spring?
c) if a & b are dead ends, is anyone cutting a few coils off a stock SP-01 flat wire recoil spring in order to lighten the weight a little?

Appreciate any help.

Cajun Gun Works has an assortment of recoil springs for the SP-01 (the tuner's pack with 5 different springs of different weights). Don't know if they are Flat wire or not.

I guess what is your concern around round wire springs?  I don't know of any source of different weight flat wire recoil springs.

If you add a metal guide rod most of them are larger in diameter and take up the extra space/slack in the round wire spring.  I've used round wire springs in my TSO's for 10's of thousands of rounds without issue (once I replaced the stock guide rod with a CGW rod).  I generally replace them at 5k intervals during my annual deep clean.  I use a round wire spring my my SP-01 Tactical with the stock plastic guide rod for thousands of rounds without issue as well.

I run Wolff springs for my hammer, recoil, and firing pin springs in my TSO's.  They haven't let me down yet.

Cheers,
Toby

The flat wire springs last so much longer than round wire, plus the flat wire springs stack a lot less than the round wire. It just seems to me like a flat wire spring is far superior. I ran 1911's hard in competition for years, and gravitated towards ISMI springs due to longer life. But when I was running Wolff springs it seemed like I was replacing them very often, they wear out quickly. I've grabbed 1911's that sat for a few years unused (Wolff springs) and have had to replace springs just to get the gun running. Bottom line is that, from experience, I prefer flat wire, particularly for a serious (non-competition/fighting) gun. I now have one 1911 with Wilson Combat flat wire recoil springs, very slick setup.

To expand on this, my love for flat wire springs started with ARs...I love the Tubb flat wire buffer spring, and Tubb has a neat video on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fMVZbrnvu8&t=26s

I see ISMI makes CZ-75 recoil springs, so if I'm forced to go to round wire recoil springs in my SP-01 that's the direction I'll head.

But first I'm going to get another stock flat wire recoil spring, and cut it down to work with my lighter target loads.
