CZ 527 in .223....opinions.
« on: July 19, 2005, 05:04:17 PM »
Hi all, new to the forum (just found it while searching the www for info).

I have a question about the tapered barrel .223 CZ.  What kind of accuracy am I looking at in the tapered barrel.  I have a CZ 550 in 308 (varmint, heavy brl model) and what few times I've shot it it is a flippin' tack driver.  I am wanting to part with it for a couple of reasons.

1) I live in Ohio, so no deer hunting w/ a rifle, so .308 is a little more then I need (mostly coyote and groundhog hunting).

2) It is flippin' heavy!!  Course, it IS a varmint gun, but when I bought it I just didn't think much about the weight.  It's too much to carry for the types of hunting I do.

BTW...I posted an add in the classifieds if you are interested.

Anyway....wanting to get the taper barrel .223 (there are no stores locally with a .223 heavy barrel).  How is the accuracy on these?  Most shots are under 200 yards on coyotes and groundhogs and I just prefer the .223 for ammo price and weight.  The .308 is a little overkill for what I need, but hey, is it accurate!

Servo79, welcome to the forum.  I cannot help you with the specifics of your question - have not shot a CZ527, but in general I have found CZs to be very accurate out of the box.

So have I, but my only experience is with my firend's .22-250 varmint laminated and my 550 varmint walnut in .308.

Wasn't sure how the tapered barrels would stack up.  I need to sell the .308 though as it is more of a fixed position shooter while I do a lot more walk-around hunting.

The CZ-527 has an extremely good reputation for accuracy, it's wat on lots of European shooting contest. Any light barrel will perform just as good as its heavy counterpart but after shooting a few repetitive round will tend to heat up & start to spread bullet everywhere on the target, the heavies mass will absorb heat and dissipate it more efficiently due to more surface area.

Look at the new CZ-527 version in 3 shot version mag., it's much more of a classy act in a light package.

All the best,

I have a 527 Prestige in .223.  This is an absolutely wonderful rifle. Excellent wood, bright blue finish and wonderful fit and finish.  I love the set trigger.

It reliably shoots about one inch with most factory ammo. Winchester 45 grain give me 3/4 inch groups.

Good Luck,

Eric

I have been shooting the 527V with different loads and bullets to determine the most accurate.  So far the 40 gr vmax with Benchmark powder has been the best.  Since Midway and Cabela's both had an excellent price on the  Speer 50 gr TNT's I am working on a load for them and I think that 1/2 inch groups from a bench rest at 100 yards will be possible.

I have a 527 LUX and and Varmint w/snythetic stock.
The Lux will do MOA with good ammo and the Varmint will do 1/2 to 3/4 inch with good ammo. The Lux is 3 shot groups while the Varmint is 5 shot groups, difference in barrel thickness, the Lux heats up faster.

I don't know where in Ohio you live, but if you're near Cinci, then Whittakers isn't real far away.  They have one more 527 Varmint walnut in .223.  (See my thread, "CZ 527 Varmint walnut in .223?" several threads below yours.)  A heavy barrel 527 will be lighter than a hvy brl 550.  They have a beautiful Prestige, an American, and Fancy American, and an English Walnut, if I remember correctly.
