CZ 527 in Laminate?
« on: October 09, 2005, 01:59:03 AM »
Greetings everyone,

I'm planning to get my first rifle, for target shooting and small games hunting.  Having heard nothing but raves about CZ rifles, and being a proud owner of a CZ-75B pistol, I have set my eyes on a CZ 527 American in .223 caliber.

The only remaining question before me is what kind of stock to choose.  I gather that non-Prestige wooden stocks are highly inconsistent in quality.  I'm afraid of getting a dud, and both Prestige and Kevlar models are too expensive for me.

This leaves the laminate stocks.  Is this the ideal alternative for someone worried about getting an ugly wooden stock?  Does anyone have any experience with the quality, aesthetics, durability, and relative weight of the laminate stocks on the CZs?  For those who have seen these stocks, I'd also like to know if the "Spring Camo" and "Sunset Camo" variants look tasteful compared to the brown laminate stock.

Any comment is appreciated.  Thanks!

After exchanging e-mails with CZ, I have decided to go with the Varmint Kevlar stock instead.  Here's what led me to this decision:

1) Where as the nice Varmint laminate stock is made by CZ in the Czech Republic, the laminate stocks on the American model are sourced to the American Walnut Company, who are also responsible for their black walnut stocks.  The inconsistency of the latter product's quality control is often remarked upon in this forum.

2) The laminate stocks on the American model are checkered, which naturally begs the question of whether they are done as badly as those on the walnut stocks.

While it could still be a fine product, I wasn't willing to wait a couple of weeks for a special order to arrive, just to be dissapointed.  This is why I finally relented to spending an extra $200 for the Kevlar stock.  I couldn't be happier right now.

I hope fellow CZ addits find the above information useful.
