I know next to nothing about optics, so I went to a Cabela's in an effort to educate myself. The only thing I learned is not to go to a Cabela's They didn't even have any ammunition I needed or wanted. Forget reloading supplies. It's been a long time since I set foot in Cabela's. Things have really gone downhill there.
Back on topic, I looked at a couple under consideration but the salesman couldn't make one work, and the other one was so weird it couldn't be right. It looked like a large everything pizza with a hole in the middle. The image was all fuzzy. That can't be right.
Anyway I'm trying to look on the Holosun website but it's been loading so slowly the past few days it's practically useless.
What can anyone tell me that will narrow my search? The gun in question isn't a CZ though It's an M&P Shield Plus OR if it matters. I really like the Shield. I also have a HK VP9 ready for an optic too.
I don't want some cheap optic but Holosun seems like it has everything going for it. Vortex is another model under consideration. Trijicon seems not only overpriced, but inferior in some respects.
Opinions welcome.
That you found no one knowledgeable at Cabela's isn't surprising. Most stores have clerks, not salespeople who know the merchandise. Unless you are lucky and find a real gun person behind the counter, this is the norm. I'm not slamming Cabela's as it's true across the board in every modern retail store.
My advice is to read online reviews, watch Youtube videos, then go to the websites, and read their spiel. There's a lot of bad information out there (you can almost tell by looking at the speaker) but there's also great information out there. You just need to learn to check it out yourself.
After you narrowed it down to a few options, then go to gun shops, Cabela's, and Sportsman's Warehouse, and check if you can see it in person. If you've done your homework and research, you'll know more than 95% of the staff. Now you're making the final decisions. Get their best price and if you've done your homework you already know the best online price.
Expect the store price to be higher. There's something to be said for buying locally if only because you can take it back easily. That's the higher price you pay for - ease of return and if you're lucky you'll get good personal service.
Nearly everything I buy is online where the prices are far better, but without the ease of a quick and fast return. However, nothing in the way of ammo, optics, firearms, or night sights, has ever needed to be returned. Most legitimate products come good out-of-the-box and are rarely in need of repair or replacement, but that's the chance I take.
I haven't seen a decent holster in a store in years. The nice ones (that depends on one's subjective opinion) are all online for me. Again, I've bought online holsters and haven't been disappointed though there's always a down-on-paper meeting of the minds first.
Go back online for your search. Have patience. Make it fun and not a chore. Good luck.
