Question for Dillon 550 reloaders
« on: May 23, 2023, 01:38:47 PM »
How do you confirm your powder charge when loading a tall pistol case like 357 or 44 mag ?  On my xl650 and xl750 with good lighting I can see the powder in each case before placing a bullet. My old school 357 load of 11.5 grains of Blue Dot filled the case enough I could see it when loading on my 550 but it's been out of stock for years and I'm down to my last few ounces. With most of my newer powders I get very little case fill is installing a borescope or endoscope camera in my tool head a good option ?

I have one of these and love it, it works great. You still might not be able to look into the case but it will brighten up the whole shell plate for sure. My thought is and this is "just me" when I load 357, I want 357 loads so I use 296/H110 and have 0 issues looking/seeing the powder. Do you stand when loading? Sitting is nice but I stand just for that reason, I look into every case as I'm moving & before I rotate the shell plate. Probably not much help but that's my thought, a scope/camera seems like to big of a project, LOL Let me know what ya end up doing.  :)

I have an LED light that fits the center hole of the Dillon 550's tool head. With it unless it's a light load in a 45 Colt case I can see my powder in a pistol case. I deliberately use powder charges that will overfill and spill out of a case if a double charge should occur. This tends to leave less unoccupied space in my 357-41-44 magnum cases. I have seen a small mirror mounted to a 550 that was angled so the owner could see into the third 550 die station. Something like a dental mirror but a bit larger and glued (?) so the owner could see into the bullet seating station.

Another vote for KMS-Squared. I've had several light systems and theirs is the very best.

For the last 25 or 30 years I've been loading on the larger Dillon auto indexing machines with much larger diameter shell plates where it's easy to see the powder level in most cases. Recently a good friend passed away and I was given his RL550 and 550C machines my plan was to use them to load 38 spl /357 mag  44 mag and 45 Colt. But even when using the UFO light I can't see the powder in most cases. I'm going to try drilling a 5/16" hole in one of my 550 tool heads just before station 3 and insert a bore scope if that works I'll report back.
