DP Rear site - kind of botched it. P-01

So I installed the Dawson Precision sight set on my P-01 this morning. Front sight was a dream. Rear site needed several test fittings and was a real PITA. I used all the correct tools including a table vise with wood blocks. DP voids your warranty if you use a sight pusher… Anyway, it was impossible not to mar the finish of the rear sight during installation. At least for me anyway. After the last test fitting, the rear sight looked so bad I ended up sanding the finish off both sides and the front of it just to make it look even. Now I guess I’ll have to deal with corrosion. Any advice moving forward?

You might be able to save it with some Birchwood Casey cold blue. Another trick I use to fix gouges in the CZ polycoat is universal black touch up paint from an auto store - matches polycoat perfectly and works on sights too.

DP sights, for all their merits, mar easily. To avoid this, put a layer or two of masking tape over the sight before you install it. That will protect the finish, even from a sight pusher. You can even put a few layers of duct tape over the aluminum punches they give you, and that works for a couple whacks, but not many more.

Don't worry about it. We've all been there. It's just part of the learning experience.

Yeah this happens. When test fitting don't go anywhere near the sight with a hammer and punch until the sight slides about halfway into the dovetail by hand. Continually beating the sight in and back out is what you don't want to be doing and you'll damage just about any sight doing it that way.
CZ's are generally some of the easiest sights to fit once you get the hang of it.
You haven't lived till you try to fit the front sight on a Beretta 92X/Vertec slide.

Looks like those solutions would mean taking the sight off the gun again. 
I don’t know. Maybe I should just keep a light coat of CLP on it. Or just bite the bullet (what a pun), get a new sight and try again. Thanks guys!

You could clean/degrease the sight and try cold blue without removing it and see how it looks but yeah if it was mine it would bother me and I'd end up replacing it. I installed exactly that sight set on 3 of my CZ compacts and like them very well.
If you do replace it take your time with the next one and fit it like I stated above also keep in mind it has a set screw so you can actually fit it to a slightly less intereference fit and the screw will hold it just don't file it too loose.

Why take it off the gun for cold blue?  I've done the safety and slide release on my CZ75 Compact with them on the pistol.  The finish on the slide and frame is a type of "paint."  The cold blue didn't leave a mark on the frame of my Compact.  I put 2 or 3 coats on them to try to make them darker.

You don't need to remove the sight. Just use a q-tip and go slow. Any excess that gets on the slide, wipe it off with cold water and a rag.
