DWX Compact and Berry's 124 flat point bullets
« on: September 13, 2023, 12:07:59 PM »
Hello All,  has anyone ran into problems with failure to feed on the DWX compact and reloads using Berry's 124 grn flat point bullets?  Any recipe ideas?  I keep dropping the OAL, but I'm getting to a concerning shorter length where I should be pulling back on powder load.  Any ideas from anyone?

Yes! I tried all sorts of OALs and still had issues. These days I only buy their Round Nose and their Hollow Base RN. The Hollow Base RN are actually their best product.

The ones definitely NOT to buy are the Berry Target Hollow Points. The mouth is too wide to negotiate any feed ramp I tried.

Yep stick with the RN's. I tried the flat nose years ago and they would only work in my 3rd gen S&W's. My CZ's would have nothing to do with them.

FWIW, I've been running Berry's 124 grn Flat Points in CZ's, Tanfoglio's, and many other 9mm Handguns with an OAL=1.065 and excellent results for years now.
Even my old Walther P38's will feed them.

The only 9mm handgun I don't run them in, is my 1936 vintage S/42 (Mauser) Luger Pistol, which prefers it's Bullets a good bit longer.

No experience with the DWX Compact.

I ordered some of Berry's round nose hollow base to try out and they look promising to me.  I was able to load them out to 1.157 and they worked fine at 1.127, I also loaded a couple lengths between the two.  I was working with 3.7gr of Sport Pistol, my usual 9mm load for 124gr.  They all chonographed around 950 fps, except the shortest length showed an uptick to the high 900's.  I observed a tighter group at the longest load length, and also at the shortest length where the speed was a bit greater.  I'm thinking I need to experiment with a bit more powder and the longest length to see what it will do.

Top left is 1.157 and bottom right is 1.127 OAL. out of a CZ P10-C

2 observations...
* Yes, their ogive is so slim that the Berry RN and HBRN can be loaded out to Max OAL of 1.160". But you will most generally see better target results when you load down around 1.110 to 1.120". That is more of 124gr bullet "thing" than anything about Berry. Deeper seating simply allows better alignment in the bore, and more surface for the case to grip the bullet.

* You are right to load the Berry like jacketed. The Berry plating is so much thicker that the jacket reacts to the bore as if it were an FMJ. (The Speer Gold Dot also behaves this way.) Any other plated bullet you'd be using the loads for Lead bullets.

Members of this forum did a LOT of testing with Berry bullets back in the late Jurassic. In fact, Berry previously sponsored this board and we were Beta testers when the Berry HBRN was being released. That info should still be in the archive !

Thank you Wobbly.  I'll look in the archive for that information and keep tinkering with the load once I've read up on it.
