85b with a newer 75 barrel
« on: September 27, 2023, 11:59:46 AM »
Found an 08 85b at a local pawn shop. Of course it had to come home with me. I did a basic field strip in the shop before I got it, it’s definitely been shot, but finish is pretty good (couple scratches).  barrel bore is bright and looks good, frame mark on the hammer, fpb is shiny from the lifter, but nothing looks absolutely worn out. DA is smooth, so I’m guessing it’s broken in. Got it home and was looking at it some more and I noticed the barrel is from a 75, and made in 21. I’m guessing the PO switched it, either on accident or intentionally changed to a new barrel. Anything else I should check or be aware of? Put 19 rounds through it last night, no problem consistent with my experience w my 75b.

Ok. I may have figured the barrel discrepancy. The frame is marked SDN Mexico DF. Which it was likely imported into Mexico. But 9mm isn’t allowed there, so was probably chambered in 380 or something. when it made its way back to the states it was converted back to 9mm. Or it was contract over run, but that doesn’t quite explain the newer barre. Wondering if I should change the recoil spring, since I’m unsure if the PO did so when changing barrels

if it was imported from Italy the barrel would be for 9X21 and not 9X19 and that would be a reason to put a new barrel 9X19 in.

Why do you think it’d be imported from Italy w the Mexican markings on the frame? Just curious if these are known for being brought in from Italy.

If that were the case, why would the slide be stamped 9mm Luger?  Maybe for police or military use?  Maybe the whole upper was exchanged at some point?

Sorry, looking at the pictures again shows that the numbers match on the slide and the frame.

Good point on the slide being marked 9 Luger. Got so wrapped into chasing it, I overlooked the slide markings. Yes the slide and frame serials match, but barrel serial is different.

When you buy replacement barrel from CZ, it comes with it's own serial number engraved. Your barrel has all standard marking of replacement barrel.

Got it. No wonder the trigger is so smooth, it’s probably been shoot a lot. Time to respring it.
