P-01 - Ejects directly into my face and head!
« on: January 31, 2024, 04:01:38 AM »
I'm using Freedom Munitions 115 grain round nose. I've put several thousand rounds of this stuff through my X-FIVE Legion with virtually zero issues.

So I'm wondering why my P-01 is consistently ejecting hot brass into my face and top of my head?

Was at the range yesterday and one casing bounced off the top of my head and landed at the back of my neck behind my shirt and then down my back directly on bare skin. Not pleasant. When I got home, I found 6 shell casings in the 2 front pockets of my flannel shirt. 3 in each pocket from when they bounced off my forehead I guess...

Is there an adjustment I can make to this pistol to have it eject perpendicular instead of up and parallel? If so, where can I find the procedure?

I purchased it August of 2023 so it's still relatively new and has about 700 or 800 rounds through it so far. I really want to love this gun but for the love of god...

Check that the ejector is not chipped or damaged in any way. it is possible to recontour the ejector end sometimes to affect ejection trajectory but this is an abnormal procedure for a CZ in that it is extremely rare that a CZ needs such work. This is the procedure used on 1911's but the same principle would apply. https://www.brazoscustom.com/post/ejection-perfection  You would follow the instructions regarding the ejector.
If the ejector is not damaged and there's no other obvious visible problem I would consider calling CZ-USA and let them handle it under warranty as any adjustment you make could void the warranty. The ejector is also part of the sear cage on the CZ so the gun needs to be fully disassembled to replace it should that need done.

It wouldn't hurt to remove the extractor and spring to clean it and the channel.

Thanks for the suggestion - just cleaned it. It was pretty dirty. Don't know if it's going to change anything but at least now I know how to do that and it will be part of my regular cleaning routine for that pistol. Won't be at the range again until next week. I'll report back then.

Pushing one pin out isn't really a big deal but I'm not a big fan of how complex it is to clean it further than the just a field strip. My X5 legion is literally a pleasure to clean when compared to the CZ.

I've never found cleaning my CZ's to be any more difficult to clean than anything else I've owned. The advent of striker fired pistols and their simpler designs does favor those with minimal mechanical skills though.

Removing the extractor for cleaning is not a regular cleaning item.  I wouldn't clean it till you fire ~1500 rounds, just my opinion.

My compact recently did the same thing. Reminiscent of the early Gen 4 Glocks. Removed the extractor and found hard carbon build up the tooth brush was missing. Also cleaned the channel as well. Hadn’t been that long before the last cleaning but this solved the problem. Some ammo is dirtier than others and perhaps would necessitate cleaning sooner.

I've never had to remove an extractor for cleaning.  Must be the excess oil I use that flushes the crud out of the way and onto my hands/holster, wipe down rag/cloth.  I don't shoot 10,000 rounds a year either.

A standard cleaning is just removing the slide, removing the recoil spring/guide, removing the barrel, cleaning, inspecting, lubing and reassembly.  My CZ's are no more difficult than the M&Ps or FNS pistols.  Do the SIGs have fewer parts to remove for a field strip clean/inspect/lube?
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

It has zero to do with "mechanical skills". Just about anyone with a brain, basic smithing tools, a bench and some decent lighting can strip down any CZ pistol and reassemble it. The level of complexity however only changes the amount of pain-in-the-ass tolerance you have. Which I'll admit I have less and less of the older I get...

The level of complexity increases the need for mechanical skills/ability. The understanding of how and why a device operates as it does is required to diagnose issues that deviate from it's normal operation. Simply taking a device apart and reassembling it gets us no where fast if we don't understand what each parts does and why.

I have a P01 Omega as my range gun.  Yesterday I went to the range to test 5 loads.  I made one pretty weak load.  This is first time this has happened it sent empties over my head.  The rest of them were normal.  I figured the weak load brought out the dirty extractor.  When I got home I cleaned the gun good and the extractor.  I had to actually pull it out because of the crud built up.  After I got it clean it was easy to just slip back in and move around.  I will try to get back out today or tomorrow to see it it helped.  I will make some more weak loads because they shot really good.  I had a Glock years ago that put them in my forehead.  People were replacing the extractor with one from their favorite third party supplier.  One guy said to just polish the top and bottom of it so it had a little more room to work.  That fixed it.  Since I am planning on keeping this one I recently bought  extra pins and springs to have on hand  in case I needed to replace one or launched one.  I had my thumb over the extractor to keep it from flying. But instead had to pull it out.  A nice film of powder residue or carbon.  I probably have 1500 rounds through it.

I got back to the range again after cleaning the extractor good.  I loaded up 20 of those weak loads plus about 30 other loads.  None went back over my head.  So the cleaning did a good job.

I ended up replacing the extractor, spring and pin. Also cleaned the channel out real well. As soon as I can get it to the range, I’ll report back with my findings.
