I run all of my 9mm reloads through a Hundo case gauge before they get boxed up.  Any rounds that stand proud in the Hundo are unceremoniously tossed into the reject bin.   I run range pickup mixed brass, so I open myself up to rejects.   Some headstamps are just trash.   Sometimes too, the coated lead bullets I load are a bit out of round or whatever.

I've found though that loads that pass the Hundo test will run just fine, even in my Apex barreled M&P's (after I've verified the OAL is acceptable with the "plonk" test.  Usually a dozen or so loads off of the 650XL are enough to give me an idea if the OAL is going to fly.)

Reloads suffering the sway back "wasp waist" brass work in the guns if the loads make it through the Hundo test.  Even reloads that pass my Dillon case gauge sometimes fail in the Hundo.   It is TIGHT!

I feed the Hundo rejects to my Glocks.   They will chamber corn cobs I think.

Had me looking for the Hundo checker - seller's page (Ben's) and Shockbottle.com.  Seems only a 100-rd product...at $100, discounted.  Way overkill and price for me. Interesting info on the mfg's FAQ page.

It is pricey.  There's no denying that. I have rationalized the purchase though as I have shot high volumes of 9mm for matches and practice.   I know I have a solid product when I take my loads to a match.  Not that I'm a threat to win anything or an occasional ammo related malfunction is going to have a huge impact on my times.   It's simply nice to know I am turning out a high quality product.  Saves me some aggravation if nothing else.

I don't shoot nearly as much as I used to in matches but the Hundo is still nice to use.

Also, the Hundo gives me a chance to do a quick QA on primer height, look for flipped primers etc fairly quickly.   It also speeds up the boxing process in the MTM plastic ammo boxes.

This is the one I use

https://www.armanov.com/shop/ammo-checker-100-rnd-with-flip-cover-36#attr=4

Lost a Master bump years back to a malfunction that this would have prevented. Last time that’s ever happened.

What was the issue not detected before the gauge?

BTW, anyone know of a production (i.e., available-to-the-public) gauge where the holes are finished with a 9x19 chamber reamer (so you get the case taper checked)?  Thanks.

No cartridge gauge or case gauge is going to be as helpful as your barrel, for the simple reason that none of these gauges have rifling.

1. So no commercially-available gauge cut with a reamer?

2. If the thru hole is the same size as the lands, wouldn't that address that issue?

Thanks.

You are missing the point that everyone is trying to make here. You need to tailor your oal and seating depth based on your barrel and it's available free bore. You can't get that from any case gauge.  Read this:  https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=103620.0

Unless it was the reamer used to cut the chamber on your barrel it won't help you.

Each manufacturer has it's own idea what tolerance they put into their chamber and how much freebore is needed and thus they spec out their own reamer.  The SAAMI spec is a guideline and isn't gospel.  Hence when you want to tailor ammo for your barrel you need to measure how long you can load with that specific bullet.

Cheers,
Toby
