Bren 3
« on: July 01, 2024, 01:17:50 AM »
Is the Bren 3 really necessary? I can understand the desire for the mid weight barrel, but the addition of the steel rail inserts for the bolt carrier is somewhat concerning. Have there been reports of the Bren 2 receivers/rifles failing during the Ukraine conflict?

I think the barrel, gas block, and handguard are nice upgrades.

The rest I don't know.

Hard to know from videos of what they improved on Bren 3 and why, compared to Bren 2.

I am willing to bet the improvements are related to actual battlefield use in Ukraine. I could be wrong, of course.

What we need are some specifics, rather than vague promotional videos.  Improved exactly in which ways?  5%, 50%, 100%?  Is it worth the extra pound of weight?  Will Bren 3 be imported to USA, or an unobtanium like Bren 2 in .308?

Have several Bren and Bren 2s, one as SBR, but not waiting on CZ-USA.  I have Sig 751P in .308 and B&T Pro 16” rifle in .223.  B&T offers Pro rifles also in .308.  Although more expensive, Swiss rifles better Brens, and all spare parts are available.

Show us some pics!!

There are several other adjustable gas piston rifles available now in various calibers: Rob Arms XCR, PWS, Brigade, PSA, etc. etc. — that you can actually get parts for readily.

I think that it's pretty telling that they won't be offering a 7.62x39 Bren 3.

I did have that thought as well.

I think you should think of the Bren 3 a bit like the SOCOM M4 upgrade packages in several respects.  With respect to costs, when you have a virtually unlimited small arms budget (UKR and US SOCOM), you're looking to find ways to exhaust your budget so appropriations continue next year, and any gains are a benefit.
The Bren 3 w/ finally interchangeable caliber/barrels is also like the SOCOM M4 dual uppers you saw where one was a CQB shorter suppressed configuration, and the other was more an Recce or SPR type configuration w/ a variable optic -- the PDW-type configuration is also notable...

This appears to be a Gucci gun for NATO countries more premier forces, likely competing w/ the SCAR primarily -- I haven't been keeping track of the latest and greatest options recently, so maybe other noteworthy competitors...

They likely dropped .308 here due to competing w/ the .270 fury and other brand new weapon systems that use it, and this design possibly not holding up to its much higher pressures, as well as no real gain in upgrading from the .308 Bren 2 that's really only unique (especially vs. .270 fury options) when in its large DMR variant/format to this V3 revision where the largest option is a 16.5" barreled gun, especially given it being a large frame vs. short frame caliber, so add'l costs and complexity there...

Pretty sure James Reeves/TFP recently tried to kaboom a Bren 2, but maybe it was Bren 3, by firing .300 BLK in a 5.56 barrel, and it remained functional, so this looks to be a safer dual caliber option for both of these calibers than the AR and other competing systems, but YMMV.

7.62x39 is likely that NATO countries already shipped most of those Combloc-era stores to Ukraine, and there are existing guns available to shoot it -- and those older weapon system pattern guns largely being reserved for second-line/auxiliary/nat'l guard type troops.  Current 7.62x39 production outside of BRICS countries isn't sufficient for wartime efforts, so no reason to bother w/ wartime production of that caliber, and .300 BLK is now roughly same cost as 7.62x39 for the West...
*Remember that this system is likely largely about finding ways to spend US and other NATO countries' tax dollars for rearmament of Ukraine and Central European allies...

*Edit, kaboom near end of this vid from a month ago, and Bren 2:

Competing with the Sig MCX, FN SCAR, HK G39, Beretta NARP, etc.. is certainly what this is meant for.

But I guess the question is does this completely replace the Bren 2? Or will they offer both?
