New Member, this gun and Gidday from Down Under
« on: April 01, 2024, 12:17:17 AM »
Howdy Team. Im a new member. Not sure how much I can say Im from Adelaide South Australia. Im a keen hunter and fisher. Im 68 got my first gun a .22 Winchester Cooey at 14. These days I really only hunt deer, rabbits and duck. Just got myself a "new" 8x57 Full wood Mauser. I saw it and it was beautiful and I could not resist it. And I don’t know why but Ive always had a soft spot for 8x57.

Its in good condition for a gun that 100 years old. It will replace my SAKO 30;06
Ive only ever owned one other BRNO CZ and that’s a Model 2 BRNO in .22. I still own it and I bought it brand new when I was 18. Ive lost count of the rabbits Ive shot with it over the journey.

But back to the 8x57. People want to tell me it’s a Ferlach. But I dont think I buy that.

I think its either a BRNO or CZ but I can find any definative markings to prove that.

This is what I think. It’s a Mauser 98.  It was nitro proofed in Prague in 1924. Thats all I can say for sure about the marks on it.  The rest is my best guesses. This gun was either made in Czechoslovakia from machinery brought into Czech after WW1 from Germany and proofed in Prague or parts were brought in from Germany after WW1 and it was assembled and proofed in Prague then.

It was made as a sporting rifle even though it has grooves and thumb cut away for stripper clip. The Serial is B219 and people tell me the B = BRNO but Im not over the line on that. Its got double set triggers and 4X quick release scope with German reticles. Once the scope is off you can use the open sights. There is one leaf on the back open sight but no markings as to distance. My guess would be the first 100 metres and the second 200 meters or greater.

Ill attached as many pictures as I can. And credible provable evidence of what this this is, who made it and what the marks represent (apart from beautiful) will be greatly appreciated
If you need any other info or pics just say and Ill do my best.

From looking at your photos, it definitely was proofed in Czechoslovakia, but until we see the markings on the "crown" of the rifle (where most maker marks are), it still looks like a Ferlach (at least from the wood and serial number markings).

Here is link to what my VZ24 BRNO markings are:  https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=85019.msg888575#msg888575 for comparison.

Welcome from Mississippi. I am very fond of your country. I completed 3 months of my medical training in Melbourne. In 1981 I was at St. vincents and Royal Childrens.

I have been back 4 or 5 times the most recent about 5 years ago

OK rdcinhou
I cant get photos off the Crown because it is 100% covered with the front scope mount
But the Lion on your third photo is exactly the same as the Lion on my Firearm next to the NP proof mark.
Does that Lion signify anything? Im guessing its the Proof House In Prague but Im still guessing.
I cant register into imagur (as recommended by this site) to post photo's because it wont accept my email and Ive no idea why. AND I cant register imagur via facebook because its down right now.
When IT works its wonderfull but when it does not (as in right now) well....

I did a bit more searching...the serial number sequence is looks like the Ferlach style from other Mauser website.
It doesn't resemble any Czech sequencing that I can find in my books.

The NPp and Lion do show that it was proofed for smokeless powder in Prague by the Czech military (per Berger book).
