High-Round count CZ SP01 (Non-shadow)?
« on: April 25, 2024, 12:38:46 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Been interested in the 9mm CZ SP01, non-shadow, manual safety, with fpb version for quite a while now. (I think the SKU is 89152 according the CZ custom website).

Is there anymore here with a high round count on this particular model?

I ask because there have been some reports of the slide failing in the past at relatively low round counts.

Here is a link where one sheared off the dust cover :
https://forums.brianenos.com/topic/215833-cz-frameslide-cracks/

And there is mention of this in another site (pistol-forum.com).

So it seems like this was a thing. In fairness, the thread above was back in 2015 and the thread in pistol-forum was back in 2016. According to a gentleman named Slavex in pistol-forum, CZ was already aware of the issue and replaced the slides?/pistols of customers who experienced this failure. CZ USA also replaced the slide for the member in the Brian Enos forum.

I am not in the USA so doing a warranty claim is impossible in case something like this happens. Plus if US customers cant get a factory replacement or a second sllde nowadays (usually to mount optics), it would be impossible then in my situation.  Wanted to know if this issue has been resolved by CZ, perhaps on newer production units of this particular model.

So to all who have put a lot of rounds through this model, how many rounds have you put though it (without the slide breaking) and what year was your gun manufactured?

Thanks in advance.

The second reply is

"seen a slide crack. couple of year ago. have not seen any since then.

No slide issue, just too light of recoil springs being used.

have not seen a frame crack"    (Emphases added by me.)

This from someone that worked at CZC.

I have a near stock 75B and SP-01  both with 10K++ rounds and an Bull Shadow with a LOT more.  There was a factory recall of some shadow slides but the CZ 75 series are extremely reliable.
If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.

I had a SP01 which developed a crack along the rail starting behind the hole for the right side safety.  I cannot recall the exact vintage as CZ USA replaced the entire gun in 2018 but I believe it had a 06 or 07 stamped slide.  It was my USPSA Production gun that had well over 30K on it before I noticed it.

Soon after that incident I switched to Carry Optics with CZ Polymer guns but I still on occasion shoot an even older SP01 Tactical (05) that by now has exceeded 30 K mark.

I think mine is a 2016 model it now has in excess of 20,000 rounds on it and the only parts I've replaced are a lighter hammer spring and the FPR pin and two recoil springs. The SPO1 was my first CZ I now own six.

Mine is about 20K+ but not the competition baby. Mostly duty and training use. Around 8K, replaced original spring for a stiffer one. Just looked all over: no cracks or issues.
I am familiar with the kind of damage too weak a spring can cause: Before SP01, I was using Glock 23 Gen 4 and the slide did crack and had to be replaced once.

Thanks for all you replies.

Studying, getting ore info and thinking about the issue further, it seems like this was a bad batch of slides which happened during that timeframe.

Some older units have gone 60k-150k rds without an issue.

CZ seems to be also aware of the issue and in all likelihood has corrected the problem in later batches. (if they know what' s good for them  ;D)

I guess if i buy a newer production unit I should be fine.

And I also believe that using too light of a recoil spring may cause issues.

Again many thanks!

Start with the recoil spring tutorial on Cajun Gun Works web site then branch out from there.  You are matching YOUR chosen ammo to your pistol and intended usage.

For general usage factory springs work.
