Sighting in the new Royal w short barrel
« on: April 25, 2024, 03:34:39 PM »

I tried sighting in at 30 yards with three different make 22s.  I could get it to the center for a few shots, but then I get a flyer 2” out.  I haven’t shot all three types ammo the same number of times so I’m not too concerned yet.  Problem is, the gun isn’t just spraying rounds, it’ll shoot two almost same hole then throw one.   Any suggestions?   FYI, been shooting since I was a kid 50 years ago and a Marine veteran.  Not any expert but well schooled.  Has me stumped a bit.  Isn’t behaving like an inaccurate barrel.  More like a scope issue.  If it hated the ammo, it’d never shoot two in the same hole.   Thanks
Dave

Try loosening the action screws and retorquing to 30 inch pounds..

Is that torque critical or is it enough to back them out and tighten?

The actual torque number isn't critical, it's mostly a trial-and-error thing. Back the screws out and begin with them snug and try shooting a group. If no improvement add a little bit more screw pressure and shoot a couple of more groups to see if the groups shrink at all. You're looking for a sweet spot where the stock and action marry well, and groups settle down. It isn't one magical number. The 30-inch pounds would be an educated guess as to where to begin. Good luck in your trials.

Are the flyers stringing vertically, or horizontally? If vertically, it may be the ammunition.

Have you removed the thread protector and inspected the crown? Have you shot it without a muzzle device? I’ve had a scope go wonky and it would shoot 3 in a group, 2 in another group and 1 random. It’s really frustrating; good luck. I’d start diagnosing this by shooting just 1 brand of quality ammo (something like AutoMatch, no reason to spend more) and start looking at all the other variables.

All horizontal.   One 4 shot group was < 3/4”

In my first attempt, I put the stock in a new Bogg Death Grip tripod.  Apparently, this wooden stock does not like that.  I took the gun to the range and laid it my Caldwell lead sled, and shot 7 different 22 rounds, five shots each and documented it.  I was surprised that the sun sonic Remingtons shot the best followed by Remington golden bullets—525 in a box bought 20 years ago.    CCI varmit stingers shot well too.      But the sub sonics made two holes with five shots!

So it’s not the barrel and the scope works ok but not for shooting small varmit sup close.

My issue now is finding a scope with max power at least 9 that will provide a clear picture at 30 yards.  The Bushnell I’m using was my go to on a 20 ga slug gun for many years and I just can’t get a crystal clear view at close ranges.   I’ll create another post about my scope needs.

Thanks
Dave
