I’ve emailed Tanfoglio directly to inquire about a few mysterious guns I’ve purchased and they’ve responded, though it takes them a while. Email them with the serial number and good images of the gun. Here’s the email. info@tanfoglio.it

Thank you. I’ve already done it and am patiently waiting. Until I hear back from them, does anyone have a good educated guess as to the manufacture date?
90’s or earlier?

You emailed Tanfglio in Italy or IFG in Amarillo, Texas?

Good news. The Tanfoglio EAA Witness magazine arrived today and it fits and works great! Loaded up a full mag of 16 rounds of OLD mixed ammo I had laying around and blasted away. Except for three duds (two of which went off on second pull) all worked fine and locked open. All it needs is a proper period correct metal floor plate to be correct to the age of the gun. But the plastic one seems to work just fine. Two more MEC gar mags are in the mail but not sure if those will work as they are for the CZ75B.

I’m thinking I may try Durakote blue black “bluing” coating instead of actual hot bluing. It will fill in and hide the various pitting spots better I think. I’m sure someone could sand the pits away and do a very good bluing job but that would be lots of work and money.

Just a thought. With the age of this gun and time spent in police evidence, would it be prudent to get a new recoil spring? I like how easy the slide is to wrack. But, the slide seems very easy to wrack. Is that normal for these guns? Do t want to beat it up more than necessary.

If it’s running properly, I wouldn’t change anything. I’ve purchased some pretty grungy and nasty guns that only needed a good cleaning to be ready to run.

Starting with a blued gun, like OP's, is so much easier than one with a painted finish. Here's a painted Argentine Hi Power I did a few years back - before, prepped and after.

Can you share what items you used to file, sand or polish the gun for bluing?

That one was just good old wet sanding with the paper over a small wood block. Started with 220 grit and progressively worked up to 600 grit. When I do need a file, I use a diamond coated flat that's 600 on one side and 1200 on the other.

If you're going to Duracoat it, you only really need to go to 220 - 320. You want something for the paint to grip to. I tried the Duracoat "blue" and didn't care for it. Ended up going over it with a different color.

Here's a SAR that I Duracoated in their HK satin black.

If you have access to a small compressor, I highly recommend buying a $14 Harbor Freight touchup gun, and buying the DC liquid instead of the aerosol. More cost effective and gives you a better finish.
No matter where you're going, there you are.

Here you go. Enter the serial number and it doesn’t manufacture date but import date. It also tells you what magazines to use by upc.

Stock magazines are the 16 rounders.

I have one that was imported in ‘93.

As for springs, Gunnerdad and I are complete opposites. I always replace the springs on any used gun I pick up. Just personal preference that gives me a little piece of mind.

If we’re talking about using this gun as a home/self defense weapon, I would absolutely agree that changing all the springs is a good idea. But if it’s just a range toy you take out every so often and play with, let it ride until it needs something.
